Eye to the future, honoring the past
I think it's presumptuous to assume Carter wouldn't have still ended up the way he did without that punishment. Who's to say? There are plenty of people out there who turned out just fine that were never physically disciplined as a child. Just like there are people who turned out to be zeroes even though they were whooped when they were younger.
Good point. I think that when the media uses the ever-tiring blanket statement to assume either everybody should use corporal punishment or not use it, it's a mistake.
BTW....it's progress report time here for our kids. My girls' grades:
My eldest's grades:
Chorus – A
Intro to T&L – B
PE – A
Math – A (thus far, his grade isn’t finalized quite yet)
Language Arts – A-
Social Studies – A
Science – still waiting on Science teacher's grade, but she thinks she definitely has an A. J
Youngest's Grades (my difficult, stubborn child that gets more 'corporal' than the other
)Reading/Language Arts – B
Writing – A
Math – A-
Social Studies – B- (we’ll have to watch this one….)
Science – A-
Art – (not a complete grade yet)
Vocal Music – (not a complete grade yet)
PE – B (we’ll have to watch this one too)
My biggest thing is that they try their hardest. I'm not going to beat the crap out of my kids because they have Bs when I THINK they can do better....especially if that's the best they can do. But, for example....my youngest came home at the beginning of last week. She's my 'want to do what the hell I want to do' kid. We studied all of the prior week for a test she had, but I was a bit more lenient on a couple of things. All of our practice tests, everything went fine.
Then, she bombs the test.
Why in the hell would I beat the crap outta her for doing bad on the test when I was lenient with her on certain things? That's partly my fault. So we buckled down the next week. She gets an A on the test.
Parents have to look in the mirror sometimes and whoop themselves for missing the mark with their kids.
