Flip Saunders says he has lymphoma

Minnesota Timberwolves president and head coach Flip Saunders announced that he is battling Hodgkin lymphoma and is currently undergoing chemotherapy.

Saunders said Tuesday that his doctors have called his condition a "very treatable and curable form of cancer."

Saunders plans to remain as the Timberwolves' head coach and top executive while being treated. He says he is determined to beat the disease, which is a cancer of the immune system.

"I am taking it step by step and day by day to understand how to best manage this process," Saunders said. "I want to thank [Wolves physician] Dr. [Sheldon] Burns as well as my medical team at Mayo Clinic for their hard work in diagnosing my situation and creating a plan to help me achieve a cancer-free outcome. I am attacking this with the same passion I do everything in my life, knowing this is a serious issue. I also know that God has prepared me to fight this battle."

Sources: Alex Rodriguez, Marc Lore to acquire majority of Timberwolves, Lynx

Marc Lore and Alex Rodriguez are expected to exercise their option to acquire controlling ownership interest of the NBA's Minnesota Timberwolves and WNBA's Lynx as soon as Thursday, sources told ESPN.

Lore and Rodriguez, who have a Dec. 31 deadline, will be formalizing an intent to purchase a final 40% of the NBA and WNBA franchises from Glen Taylor -- giving Lore and Rodriguez 80% total of the two teams by early 2024, sources said.

Lore and Rodriguez still have more time to raise the necessary money to complete the majority purchase, which will be subject to NBA Board of Governors approval.
