There's no way Illinois makes the over all by themselves this week. They're facing a much better defense than they did last week.
 
Wait.

I thought Illinois had the best defense out of that state since the '85 Bears?

How is it possible lowly Minnesota could be having their way with them? I mean I think we all understand the ZOMG! scUM offense tearing them up but Minny?

I'm confused.

There was an interesting play in this game. Illinois had a 3rd and 5 around the 23-yard line, and Scheelhause pitched the ball on an option. It was a a fairly normal-looking play, the pitch went about a full yard backward, but was dropped by the RB, but it bounced right back up to him, and he would have easily made the first down inside the red zone. But the ref (who wasn't even with either Scheelhause or the RB, he was a few yards ahead), incorrectly blew the whistle and ended the play, giving them a 4th a 5.

Zook challenged the play, and the review said he was correct; it was a lateral and the whistle shouldn't have been blown, but since the whistle did blow there was nothing they could do to change the call of 'incomplete forward pass'. Zook then went for it on 4th and 5 (a 40-yard FG would have been into a wind in Champaign similar to the tOSU-Illinois game, so it was a reasonable decision), but they were stopped, and then Minny went on a long scoring drive to get back into the game.

It seemed like the replay decision, to be fair, would have given the Illini the down back, making it 3rd and 5, rather then 4th and 5, since there was no incomplete pass, and the whistle denied the Illini the opportunity to get the first down. But they didn't do that - replay rules probably preclude it, and the head ref didn't bother to change it either (I'm not sure if he would have been able to).

A bad break for the Illini. A first down there (which they would have had without the bad whistle), and they probably would have got points on that drive, and might have won the game. Of course, Zook still might have found a way to lose, like he did by giving up 2 TDs to inept Minnesota in the last few minutes, while going into the nasty wind. :tongue2:
