Basebuck, sorry I never responded (I never do look down at the bottom portion of the main menu page).
Hawaii for the most part is as proud to be a state as most any other state. As buckeye68 and C-Dog have pointed out above, there is quite a bit of patriotism here, both because of the large proportion of military presence in the general population and the fame of the "Go for Broke" Japanese division of the U.S. Army from WWII. By in large, the military here is pretty much respected.
However, Hawaii does have an identity crisis when it comes to being part of the US. Because it is so isolated nearly (3,000 niles from the mainland), it never appears on maps shown on TV (always shows the "lower 48", and conveniently leave out Alaska and Hawaii). Many items advertised on national TV shown in Hawaii either unavailable in Hawaii (XM satellite radio, certain restaurants, etc.) or are more expensive (note the "prices higher in Alaska and Hawaii" fine print at the bottom of many commercials). The general ignorance of Hawaii by the mainland population doesn't help either ("What type of money do they use in Hawaii?", "Do they speak English in Hawaii?", etc.). Hawaii also likes to think of themselves as "unique", as in their "unique island lifestyle", as if they there are no other tropical island entities in the world (hell, we have Guam and Puerto Rico as territories, not to mention the dozens of other island countries).
There also is some prejudice toward "non-locals" (i.e., whites and blacks) by some locals, but for the most part it isn't all that bad. All in all, I enjoy living here.
