Just heard Bert Sugar(Noted Boxing Historian) on the Radio the other day... Ranks Tyson as the 100th greatest fighter (All Weight classes) of all time.... biggest knock against him was that he didn't beat anyone of note in his whole career.

Ray Robinson was #1, btw.

Yeah, Sugar puts out a book every couple years or so of the 100 Greatest Fighters of All time. "Sugar Ray" Robinson has been number 1 in every version I've seen. And, coincidentally, Tyson has been # 100 in every version I've seen.

Besides those constants, Sugar fudges around with the rankings for each book. On some books, you may see Ali 10th, and others you may see him as high as 5 (never saw him ranked higher than that by Sugar).

I beleive Ali is 10th currently (I think a new edition just came out)... And his reasoning is pretty strong... since he pretty much does the ranking the same way you do your baseball rankings... not, "This guy could beat that guy," etc...

Yeah, Sugar's analysis & opinions are pretty accurate. He puts a lot of the turn of the century fighters up at the Top of his list, like Jack Johnson is # 2 or 3 (I forget) and the modern fighters are behind them.

I think its difficult to compare fight stats, because back then (even as recent as the 1960's), fighters fought much more often than they do today. So, how can you compare an Evander Holyfield (who fights MAYBE twice a year) to Sugar Ray Robinson who dominated like 140 fights? Tough to do ..

Tyson plans return ? in Youngstown
Friday, September 29, 2006 Even Mike Tyson doesn?t know why people would pay to see him fight anymore.
?That?s what I said,? he said to that question Thursday, drawing laughter at a news conference in Youngstown to announce ?Mike Tyson?s World Tour,? in which he will fight in a series of four-round exhibitions.
?I think I?m useless to society. I don?t think I?m worthy of the people who come out to see me, but they do.?
The former heavyweight champ appeared calm and relaxed, smiling and joking about the shape he?s in physically, mentally and financially.
But he said he was nervous to be back in front of an audience and in inner turmoil, his recent years marked by embarrassing fights ? inside and out of the ring ? and staggering debt.
?The money I make here is not going to help any of my bills really from a tremendous standpoint,? he said. ?But I?m going to feel better about myself. I?m not going to be depressed.?
The ?baddest man on the planet? acknowledged he?s in horrible shape and only capable of going three or four rounds.
So Tyson, who last fought in June 2005, losing to the unheralded Kevin McBride, will return to the ring Oct. 20 at the 6,000-seat Chevrolet Centre in Youngstown for a pay-per-view event against former sparring partner Corey ?T-Rex? Sanders.

Tyson nears return to ring; thinking about fighting women
Tuesday, October 17, 2006
THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

STRONGSVILLE - Mike Tyson said fans should not expect much of a fight when he steps back into the ring.
But the 40-year-old former heavyweight champ promised an entertaining show Friday night when he launches the "Mike Tyson's World Tour" in Youngstown.
At a news conference at an Italian restaurant, Tyson said he would likely go just four rounds and that future stops on the tour might include bouts with women, possibly professional boxer Ann Wolfe.
Wolfe, from Waco, Texas, is 21-1 with 15 knockouts.
"She's such a prominent, dominant woman in the boxing field," Tyson said.
When asked if he was joking about fighting women, Tyson said, "I'm very serious."
Russ Young, a promoter for Wolfe, said such a bout will never happen.
"That's the first we've heard of it," Young said. "No state would sanction that. She would be outweighed by 60 to 70 pounds. Ann would never entertain the idea."
Tyson said the tour was meant to be fun and raise money for charity.
"It's all fun. I'm not Mike Tyson," he said, referring to the fierce boxer whose career was upended by a prison term. "I'm not 20 years old. I'm not going to smash anybody. I'm not going to talk about smashing anybody's brains. You're not going to see that guy no more."
At the press conference, Tyson posed for photos with fans, signed autographs and campaigned for Maryland U.S. Senate candidate Michael Steele.
Tyson, wearing a white and blue Steele for U.S. Senate T-shirt, said he used to believe black Republicans were "sellouts." But Tyson said he changed his mind after researching the Maryland lieutenant governor.
"We have to open our eyes more," Tyson said, as he pointed to his T-shirt.
His recent years have been marked by embarrassing fights - inside and out of the ring - and staggering debt. Tyson last fought in June 2005, losing to the unheralded Kevin McBride.
He will return to the ring Friday at the 6,000-seat Chevrolet Centre in Youngstown for a pay-per-view event against former sparring partner Corey "T-Rex" Sanders.
Tyson had said he was finished with boxing after his bout with McBride, which he quit after six rounds.
The man who vowed to eat Lennox Lewis' children and bit off a piece of Evander Holyfield's ear has said he's in no mood for a comeback. He recently trained in a makeshift ring at a Las Vegas hotel.

Mike Tyson arrested in Arizona on DUI, drug charges

The article doesn't surprise me in the least but this quote did:

"He showed signs of impairment, and voluntarily submitted to field sobriety tests," said Hall, a member of the Buckeye Police Department who was working in the area as part of a holiday DUI task force.

I guess since we own Arizona they decided to name a police department after us.
