Nugent gives Jets some kick

PHILADELPHIA -- It was a meaningless preseason game in Philadelphia -- not an AFC divisional playoff game in Pittsburgh -- but rookie kicker Mike Nugent showed pop and accuracy in his right leg, and the best may be yet to come.
At least the Jets hope so.
Nugent, drafted in the second round (47th overall) out of Ohio State to replace playoff goat Doug Brien, drilled three field goals (48, 35 and 33 yards) in the Jets' 37-14 victory over the Eagles last night at Lincoln Financial Field in a battle of backups.

Entering the game last night, Nugent had hit his only attempt this preseason and the Jets wanted to get him some work. He finished the preseason hitting 4-of-4 field goals. His other kick was from 40 yards.
Last night, Nugent also displayed some distance on his kickoffs, notching his second touchback of the preseason. He also put one on the goal line. Most of his kickoffs have been to the 5-yard line. Two have gone out of bounds. Nugent kicks off from the 30-yard compared to the 35-yard line in college.
"It's good for your confidence and experience to get things going," Nugent said. "It was good to get out there with everybody. One thing I really liked was the clock was going down and we had to speed it up a little bit (on one kick). ... I think any kicker wants to get as many chances as he can."
Said quarterback Chad Pennington: "I was praying he hit that first one (48 yards), because I knew if he missed, you guys (the media) would be all over him. It's exciting to know if we get inside the 30-yard line, we have a chance."
Pennington and most of the Jets starters played one only series, with Pennington leading a touchdown drive. None of the Eagles' first-teamers, including quarterback Donovan McNabb and wide receiver Terrell Owens, played in the final tune-up before the regular season.
The Jets finished the preseason 3-1. The Eagles were 2-2.
Defensive ends John Abraham and Shaun Ellis, defensive tackle Dewayne Robertson, cornerback Ty Law, running back Curtis Martin, wide receiver Laveranues Coles and backup quarterback Jay Fiedler were given the night off.

September 2, 2005 NEW YORK (AP) -- Jets coach Herman Edwards spied Mike Nugent during pregame warmups and decided to take a seat in the stands and watch.
Nugent was trying to outkick David Akers while the two got ready for the Jets-Eagles game Thursday night. Edwards was impressed. He got an even better look during the contest, when Nugent kicked three field goals in a 37-14 victory.
``He likes trying to make the big kick,'' Edwards said Friday on a conference call. ``If you saw him in the warmups, he was competing with the other guy. I went out early, sat in the stands and I watched him, I watched what he was doing and what the other guy was doing. His mental makeup is very good.
``He's a tough guy, he wants to make the kick. He looks forward to helping us win games with his leg. When he goes in there, he has an excellent chance to make it.''
Edwards had said he wanted to see more from Nugent in the preseason finale. Did he ever. Nugent made his first one from 48 yards, then added kicks from 35 and 33 yards.
The Jets drafted Nugent in the second round after Doug Brien missed field goals from 47 and 43 yards in an overtime loss to Pittsburgh in the playoffs.
Everyone was interested in how Nugent would fare on his first kick Thursday.
``I was praying he would make it because you guys would have been all over him,'' quarterback Chad Pennington said after the game.
Even Nugent was happy with his performance. It always helps getting some kicks in before the season opener at Kansas City on Sept. 11.
``It's good for your confidence and experience to get things going,'' Nugent said. ``It was good to get out there with everybody. I think any kicker wants to get as many chances as he can.''
When Edwards spoke to Nugent after the draft, he was impressed with the composure of his young kicker, a captain at Ohio State. Edwards believes Nugent will have a long career in the NFL.
``He'll have a heck of a career,'' Edwards said. ``That's what you want. You drafted a guy you think will be here for 10, 12 years. If he can stay consistent, stay healthy he has the ability to do that. I know he has the mind-set and the work ethic to do that.''
