Although he has yet to fully flourish as a quarterback prospect, the upside potential of Mike Hartline is so painfully obvious. Neither Hartline's recruitment nor his senior season at GlenOak have gone the way he once thought they would, but that has made the 6-6, strong-armed quarterback even more determined to make a better future for himself. Hartline, once pegged by so many to be a Buckeye, has an official visit with Kentucky this weekend and one with llinois in December already set.

Last summer, when Mike Hartline arrived at the University of Kentucky, it didn?t take long before he was ready to pull the laces out of every football the Wildcats had at practice.

He left GlenOak High School as a highly touted recruit. He came to Kentucky as another lost freshman taking a daily cold shower in the water that is reality.

Hartline front-runner to be UK's QB
Phillips says sophomore showing summer leadership

It could be well into fall camp before Kentucky Coach Rich Brooks names a starting quarterback, but if the off-season is any indication, sophomore Mike Hartline has taken a slight edge over junior Curtis Pulley.

Offensive coordinator Joker Phillips said reports that he?s gotten so far suggest that Hartline has been the quarterback who has shown the most leadership this summer.

?They both are trying to lead, but Mike?s a little bit ahead right now,? Phillips said. ?He?s doing things the right way.'?

But Hartline has made the bigger impression this off-season.

?He?s showing up on time, he?s working with the young quarterbacks, he?s helping out the young receivers, not only by coaching them up on the field, but by helping them learn the offense,? Phillips said. ?He seems to be in charge of the offense right now, and that?s what you want out of your starting quarterback.?

Hartline now gets his chance to win Wildcats' trust

More than any other position on the football field, there has to be inherent trust in the quarterback.

Despite what anybody says, Kentucky will miss talented junior Curtis Pulley, who was dismissed from the team Tuesday by coach Rich Brooks for violating team rules.

Pulley was going to be on the field somewhere this season for the Wildcats ... quarterback, receiver, somewhere. Brooks told me back in May at the SEC spring meetings that Pulley was the kind of freakish athlete that doesn't come along every year. He's also the kind of athlete you can't keep off the field.

That is, unless you can't trust him.

Pulley obviously violated that trust one too many times, and now he's history. The Kentucky quarterback picture also just got a lot clearer.

Sophomore Mike Hartline, who's yet to take any meaningful snaps in a game at Kentucky and has thrown just six passes in his college career, steps to the forefront after impressing the coaches in the spring. The feeling then was that he simply needed a chance.

He'll get that chance and then some this fall.

It's one thing to be stepping into that starting quarterback straddle for the first time. But in Hartline's case, he does so with just about all the main weapons from a year ago gone.

That means the Wildcats will grow up together on offense this season, which can be a dicey proposition in the SEC.

The 6-6, 205-pound Hartline has classic drop-back size, but he's also a lot more mobile than he looks. In high school in Canton, Ohio, he advanced to the state finals in the 300 hurdles, high jump and 4x400 relay.

But what impressed his teammates most this past spring was the way he assumed leadership responsibilities even though he'd never really played before

When Mike Hartline walked toward the horde of reporters Tuesday during the University of Kentucky's media day, he knew his life ? in a blink really ? had changed.

Hartline had been battling for the Wildcats starting quarterback position all spring and summer.

In the SEC, where scouts like to say there are no rules below the Mason-Dixon line, Kentucky Head Coach Rich Brooks sent a strong message to his team. Chris Pulley, perhaps the most talented player on Kentucky's roster, was kicked off the team this week. It was a decision Brooks made just before the Wildcats took their team picture. He didn't tell the team ? including Hartline ? until after the photo.

"I was shocked," Hartline said.

The GlenOak High School graduate, who grew up in his older brother Brian's shadow, still was processing the information as he walked to his spot for interviews.

"After (being informed), the pressure came," Hartline said. "Tons of reporters came over to talk about it."

The Presumptive Starter
Mike Hartline 6'6", 204 lb sophomore -- Hartline has appeared in four games for UK, going 4 for 6, for 34 yards and one interception. The Canton, Ohio native came to UK with an impressive resume'; his senior year in high school Hartline threw for 1,523 yards and six touchdowns, while rushing for 533 yards and 12 more touchdowns. His junior year he threw for 2,405 yards and 16 touchdowns, while rushing for 353 yards and eight touchdowns. He was named an All-America by PrepStar, and rated the #31 pro-style quarterback by Rivals. He was also rated one of the top-40 prospects in the state of Ohio. SuperPrep rated him one of the top-125 prospects in the six state Midwest area. In his senior year Hartline participated in the state championship finals in the 300 meter hurdles, high jump, and 4x400 relay. Hartline's brother, Brian, is a receiver at Ohio State ( we won't hold that against him ).
Hartline brings size, athleticism, and mobility to the quarterback position. He also brings a terrific attitude about what is expected from him from a leadership standpoint:

From George Blanda to Tim Couch, Jared Lorenzen and Andre Woodson, Kentucky has turned out some memorable quarterbacks.

Playing in their shadows isn't easy.

That's what Mike Hartline is doing, and the GlenOak High School graduate is handling his role as a first-year starter for the Wildcats relatively well.

Hartline has Kentucky off to a 4-1 start, and with the help of one of the country's best defenses, nearly upset No. 2 Alabama last week.

Hartline and the Wildcats host South Carolina on Saturday at Commonwealth Stadium. He knows fans have great expectations for him.

"I think times are changing here," Hartline, a sophomore, said after practice Thursday. "Even back when Couch was here, it was all about basketball. Fans would come out to the games and hope we won. They didn't expect us to go to a bowl game and for a quarterback to go out there and put up the type of numbers we have.

"It's always been about basketball, and while basketball is still important and a big-time attribute to the university, football is growing."

So are the expectations.

"There's pressure, but at the same time our coaches have put it in perspective as to what they want me to do to be the starter. I'm going to be here three more years. It's a marathon, not a sprint. ... They want me to take care of the football, keep my emotions in check, and realize I have 10 other guys out there and I have to get the ball to the athletes."
