I just got raped by Midas yesterday-my alternator conked out, and I have to get a new one put in, so I had my truck towed at 1:30 in the morning to Midas on Henderson. Unfortunately, being out of town, that was really the only option I had-and I am stuck paying $330 for a damn alternator-they would not let you go to AutoZone and buy one for $100. If I was at home, I could have had everything fixed by my regular mechanic in Dayton for about $200-parts and labor, w/ midas I had to pay $480-I hate car repair chains-always find an independent guy you can trust....

At some point the "brilliant" people at Midas realized the wide use of stainless steel in exhaust systems would be their ruin.
So, the best bet was to get into auto repair.
There is great variation in the way each store is run and the quality of the labor.
Your only alternative is to find a shop you can some what trust.
Obviously, if your out of your area, your S.O.L. :(

I'll vote for brake repair shops as the biggest ripoffs. The majority of brake repairs (front) could be done by any one of us. $30 each for rotors, $20 each for pads and 1-2 hours of your time.

How they come up with 4-$500 at the brake shops is beyond me.

I can break it down for you.
60+% mark-up on the parts.
Labor at $40-$90 per hour, flat rate. (You know it takes 2.5 hours to change front brakes, right :wink2:)
Shop fees (waste disposal).
A $500 brake job should include at least one other BJ, preferably not from the mechanic, but maybe from his sister or wife (in some areas this will be the same person).

You should have called Northshorebuck. For some beer and something to hunt he would have helped you out! :wink2:

My car broke down when I was in school in Columbus and had it towed to a gas station/auto repair shop near my apartment. The guy gave me a quote and I called my mechanic back home near Akron. Based on what I described to him and the estimate he said it sounded legit.

The repair cost was more than the car was worth so I decided not to cope with the sunk costs and drove the thing a couple of hours north to get a new car. I was a couple of months from graduating and fortunately could afford a new one.

My gf's car acting up, so she asked me to give it a drive, as soon as I got in and tried to brake I could tell they were shot. So she took it to NTB on tuttle to get a price and have them look at them, that was all. They came back with a 7oo dollar estimate. So i called and asked them about the car. They told me that there was 10% left of the brakes and the back drums were completly shot. So I ask.......well is it safe to drive to pittsburgh this weekend ( knowing it wasn't) the answer was yes........with having only 10% brakes not sure why you would tell someone it was safe to drive it. Anyway.....went on the trip with My car instead, got back yesterday....went to autozone ands bought nome new brakes and rotoers, then went to her borhters house, and we changed out the front brakes. Took off the back wheels and found that you could tell the drums were never even open to be looked at on the back wheels. opened to make sure they were fine which they were. So got the whole thing done for under a hundred bucks...and that was including buying her brother and his roomate pizza and beer from helping out so it didn't take as long to do.
