    NILES, Ohio – The Ohio State baseball team defeated Youngstown State, 7-4, Tuesday night at Eastwood Field. Junior first baseman Conner Pohl tied the game in the fifth with a grand slam in a three-hit game, while junior right fielder Dominic Canzone blasted the go-ahead, two-run homer in the top of the eighth for his team-best 15th homer of the season. Freshman left-handed reliever Mitch Milheim claimed his first collegiate win in the road victory (1-1). With the win, the Buckeyes improve to 28-24 overall, while the Penguins drop to 12-38 in 2019.

    MOMENTUM WIN
    “We wanted to come up here and get some momentum with a win as we go into a big weekend in West Lafayette,” head coach Greg Beals said. “We got some big hits from Conner Pohl and Dominic Canzone. We put up 13 hits on the board which is a great thing to see. Dom’s throw to the plate to end the seventh was huge from a momentum standpoint. It was a big-time play. Dom is so much more than just a hitter with the way he plays right field for us. The arm strength is solid and the accuracy is what’s so good. I told the guys after the game, let’s take it to West Lafayette and let’s go take care of business in our conference.”

    COMING DOWN TO THE WIRE IN THE BIG TEN
    Ohio State concludes the regular season at West Lafayette, Ind., for a three-game Big Ten series at Purdue Thursday-Saturday. The Buckeyes (9-12) are in ninth place in the Big Ten standings behind Rutgers (9-11), Northwestern (10-11) and Iowa (12-9) with one weekend of play remaining. Behind the Buckeyes are Maryland (9-12), Michigan State (7-13) and Purdue (7-13). The Top 8 teams in the league will punch their ticket for the 2019 Big Ten Tournament May 22-26 at TD Ameritrade Park in Omaha, Neb. The series vs. Purdue will be streamed on BTN Plus and can be heard on AM 1460 ESPN.

    PENGUINS JUMP OUT ON TOP
    Youngstown State scored the first run on a RBI bloop single by Jeff Wehler in the bottom of the first. Lead-off hitter Lucas Nasonti was hit by a pitch and stole second before scoring on the hit by Wehler. In the bottom of the third, Wehler launched a two-out, three-run homer over the wall in left to make it 4-0 in favor of the Penguins.

    POHL SLAM TIES IT
    Pohl from Arcanum, Ohio, launched a two-out grand slam in the top of the fifth on a 2-0 count off YSU starting pitcher Jon Synder over the wall in right to tie the game at 4-all. It marked the first grand slam by the Buckeyes this season.

    DOM CAN DO IT ALL
    Canzone showed in the late innings vs. the Penguins why he is in the running for the Big Ten Player of the Year award. With the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh, Canzone caught a fly ball in right and fired a strike to catcher Brent Todys at the plate to complete the inning-ending double play and keep the score knotted at four apiece. After an infield single by Erwin, Canzone launched a two-run, no-doubt shot over the wall in right to give the Scarlet and Gray their first lead of the game. The homer was Canzone’s 15th of the year, the most homers by a Buckeye in a single season since Christian Snavely hit 16 homers in 2003. He pushed home the team’s seventh run on a sac fly in the ninth.

    ON THE MOUND
    Ohio State starting pitcher Jake Vance threw three innings and gave up four runs on three hits with one walk in a no decision. Right-handed reliever Joe Gahm tossed 2.2 scoreless innings of relief with two walks and one hit. Right-handed reliever Bayden Root tossed 0.2 scoreless inning with one walk. Milheim earned the win to improve to 1-1, throwing 2.2 scoreless innings with three strikeouts on two hits. He fanned one in the eighth and got a YSU hitter to roll into a double play to end the frame.

    GAME NOTES
    • Ohio State improves to 16-2 all-time vs. Youngstown State. The Buckeyes have won 11 straight games dating back to 1997.
    • With a lead-off walk, Dominic Canzone extended his reached base streak to 48 games. He is three games shy of tying Nick Swisher’s reached base streak record of 51 games set in 2002.
    • Canzone launched his team-best 15th homer of the year. It’s the most homers by a Buckeye since Christian Snavely hit 16 homers in 2003. Canzone extended his hit streak to six games.
    • Dingler extended his reached base streak to 28 games with a walk in the fifth.
    • Other reached base streaks extended: Winand (5).
    • Pohl launched his third homer of the season.
    • The grand slam by Pohl was the first grand slam by a Buckeye in 2019. Pohl drove in a season-high four BRI.
    • Multi-hit games: Pohl (13), Carpenter (8) and Erwin (6).
    • Multi-RBI games: Canzone (10) and Pohl (9).
    • Gahm threw a season-high 2.2 innings tonight on the mound.
    • Milheim picked up his first collegiate win tonight.

    • It’s been awhile since random notes. Why not bring it back for the last midweek game of the year?
    • Back in the 330 for the boys. It was the first trip to Eastwood Field since 2015, a minor league park located on the grounds of the Eastwood Mall in Nile, Ohio. Home to the Mahoning Valley Scrappers, short-season squad for the Cleveland Indians (Roll Tribe). The park is minor league baseball at its finest. The advertisement on display from foul pole to foul pole. A kids fun zone behind the left field bleachers. The bullpen bar and grill down the right field line. A brand-new videoboard was featured behind the right center wall. The Ohio State SID was told it is one of the best in The New York–Penn League. Love that. This is the place to be in mid-July for a night out at a ball game.
    • Electric BP list at Eastwood Field. Add it to the list of electric parks on the year.
    • The Ohio State SID and OSU digital slo-mo specialist Jack Srail were the first to arrive at the concession stand at the park. Around 4:42 p.m. ET. You know they got the chicken fingers basket. Crunchy chicken. Crispy fries. No honey mustard though. If you tasted the ketchup long enough, it almost tasted like honey mustard. Almost.
    • No Matt Andrews or Bob Spears on the radio call tonight. Sad. But don’t worry, they’ll be back on air this weekend at Purdue. AM 1460 ESPN. Tune in.
