LANSING, Mich. - Ohio State scored in all but two innings, getting at least three runs in three different innings as it beat Michigan State 16-2 Friday at Oldsmobile Park to win the opening game of a four-game Big Ten series.
With 18 hits, the Buckeyes posted a double-digit total for the 26th time this season and in five of the last nine games. All but two players who had a plate appearance had a hit. Five different players had multiple hits, including three by Jason Zoeller (Jr., Verona, Pa./Shady Side Academy) and Justin Miller (Fr., Dayton, Va./Turner Ashby). Each finished the game with two RBI as did Ronnie Bourquin (Jr., Canton, Ohio/Canton South) and Tony Kennedy (So., Bloomington, Ind./Bloomington South). Matt Angle (So., Whitehall, Ohio/Whitehall-Yearling) led the Buckeyes in going 2-for-3 with four RBI.
The Buckeyes won for the ninth time in their last 12 games and improved to 29-14 overall and 13-8 in the Big Ten. The 16 runs were the most since they used a season-high 22 hits to beat Lehigh 17-10 on March 10. Ohio State tied a season high with six doubles and also added a triple, their 22nd of the year, which ranks third in school history.
Ohio State scored twice in the top of the second to take an early 2-0 lead. Zoeller led off the inning with a blooper into shallow center and Wes Schritzinger (Jr., Westerville, Ohio/Westerville North followed with a double down the right-field line. Zoeller scored when Spartan shortstop Tony Krider's throw to first on a grounder by Miller was too tall for first baseman Steve Gerstenberger. A sacrifice bunt by Michael Arp (Fr., Reynoldsburg, Ohio/Reynoldsburg) moved both runners into scoring position and then a sac fly by Angle scored Schirtzinger.

Michigan State scored a run in the bottom of the second. OSU starting pitcher Dan DeLucia (Jr., Columbus, Ohio/Bishop Watterson) hit Oliver Wolcott to start the inning. Krider bunted him over with a sacrifice before he was caught trying to steal third. E.J. Daws followed with an infield single and went to third on a double to right by Kyle Day. He was able to score on the throw in from Schirtzinger, the Buckeye right fielder, when the ball got by cut-off man Jedidiah Stephen (Sr., Caldwell, Ohio/Shenandoah), the Buckeye shortstop. The score pulled the Spartans within a 2-1 score.
Ohio State used a pair of bases-loaded walks and a two-run single by Bourquin. Zoeller led off the inning with a double down the left-field line and went to third on a sacrifice bunt by Schirtzinger. Miller drew a walk and then stole second to put a pair of runners in scoring position. A second walk to Arp loaded the bases before two more walks yielded two to give Ohio State a 4-1 lead. Bourquin gave the Buckeyes a five-run lead, 6-1, with his two-run single to left.
Leading off the fifth, Zoeller reached base for the third time of the game when Krider could not cleanly field a grounder to short. Schirtzinger sacrificed for the second straight time to send Zoeller to second before Miller moved him to third with a single to right. Zoeller scored on a ground out by Arp to go up 7-1.
Fryer became the second Buckeye to hit four triples this season when he led off the sixth with a shot over the head of centerfielder Adam Tripp. With two runners on following a walk to Bourquin, Chris Macke (So., Terre Haute, Ind./Terre Haute North) delivered a one-out pinch-hit single through the left side to score Fryer. Zoeller followed with a double to right to plate both Bourquin and Macke and put Ohio State on top 10-1.
The scoring continued in the seventh for the Buckeyes, who added two more runs to take a 12-1 lead. J.B. Shuck (Fr., Galion, Ohio/Galion) led off the inning with a double to left-center and went to third on a single through the right side by Angle. Fryer walked to load the bases and Kennedy drove in two runs with a single up the middle.
In the eighth, Shuck had an RBI single to right and Angle followed with a two-run double down the left-field line to give Ohio State a 14-run lead, 15-1. In the bottom of the inning with one on and two out, Michigan State got an RBI double from Alan Cattrysse to score his team's second run of the game to make it a 15-2 lead. Cattrysse finished the game 3-for-4 to lead the Spartans, which fell to 21-22 and 9-12.
A two-run double down the right-field line by Miller got the run back in the top of the ninth.
DeLucia allowed two runs (one earned) on 10 hits in his eight innings. He walked one and struck out six to win for the eighth time this season (8-2), the most victories in the Big Ten. He handed the game over to Dan Barker (So., Dayton, Ohio/Northmont) who pitched the ninth. Starter John Dwan took the loss, allowing seven runs on seven hits and five walks in 4.1 innings. He had five strikeouts in falling to 1-5.
The series continues Saturday with a doubleheader at 5:05 p.m. before it concludes Sunday with a single game at 1:05 p.m. All three games will be broadcast on AM 920 WMNI and on ohiostatebuckeyes.com.

    Box Score
LANSING, Mich. - Ohio State could not hold an early lead Sunday in the Big Ten series finale at Michigan State Sunday as the Spartans took the lead in the second on their way to a 5-2 victory at Oldsmobile Park.
Ohio State scored two runs in the top of the first inning. J.B. Shuck (Fr., Galion, Ohio/Galion) started the first game of his career as both the pitcher and designated hitter. He led off the game with a double to left and scored when Matt Angle (So., Whitehall, Ohio/Whitehall-Yearling) singled up the middle. Eric Fryer (So., Reynoldsburg, Ohio/Reynoldsburg) bunted him into scoring position on the sacrifice to set up a second score when Ronnie Bourquin (Jr., Canton, Ohio/Canton South) sent a base hit up the middle.
Taking to the hill in the bottom of the inning, Shuck gave up a lead-off double to left-center field to Troy Krider. He then got Tony Clausen to fly out to center, but a base-running error by Krider let Angle, the Buckeye centerfield, to throw to second for a double play. Shuck hit the next batter and gave up a two-run home run by Ryan Basham to tie the score. Shuck gave up two more hits and walked another to load the bases, but after a visit from pitching coach Harry Gurley, he responded with a strikeout to prevent further damage.
Michigan State added two more runs in the second inning to take a 4-2 lead. Oliver Wolcott led off with a double to right, stole third and then scored on a throwing error by Fryer, the Buckeye catcher, trying to catch him at third. Krider followed with a base hit, but was nabbed at second on a fielder's choice by Jamey Embree. Embree stole second and then scored on a single to right by Kyle Day. Another base-running mistake led to another outfield assist and double play to get out of the inning.

An RBI single by E.J. Daws put Michigan State on top 5-2 in the sixth inning. Steve Gerstenberger scored on the play after leading off the inning with a single to right. Sean Walker bunted him over with a sacrifice.
The Buckeyes got a runner to third with just one out in the sixth. Wes Schirtzinger (Jr., Westerville, Ohio/Westerville North) reached with a one-out single to right and then went to third on a single by Justin Miller (Fr., Dayton, Va./Turner Ashby). Shuck popped up in foul ground for the second out before a fielder's choice by Angle stranded the runner.
In the seventh, Ohio State wasted a pair of lead off hits up the middle by Fryer and Bourquin. Trying to sacrifice, Jedidiah Stephen (Sr., Caldwell, Ohio/Shenandoah) popped up a bunt to the pitcher, who threw over to first, catching Bourquin for a double play. Michael Arp (Fr., Reynoldsburg, Ohio/Reynoldsburg) grounded out to end the inning.
Ohio State, which stranded 13 base runners in game three, left at least one runner on base in each of the first seven innings of the series finale and stranded 10 runners in the game.
Fryer was a perfect 3-for-3 with a sac bunt, while Bourquin, Arp and Miller each had two hits. Krider had three hits to lead Michigan State, which improved to 22-24 overall and 10-14 in the Big Ten.
Mark Sorensen pitched his first complete game of the season, getting the win to improve to 3-2 on the year. He allowed two runs on 12 hits and had three strikeouts and no walks. Shuck took his second straight loss to fall to 6-3. He allowed four runs on eight hits in just 1.1 innings. Dan Barker (So., Dayton, Ohio/Northmont) pitched solid in relief, allowing just one run on four hits in 6.2 innings, but did not get any offensive support.
Despite the loss, Ohio State won its fifth Big Ten series of the year and has won 11 of its last 15 games.
Ohio State (31-15, 15-9) will not play a non-conference game this week and will return to action next weekend in a four-game Big Ten series against Minnesota at Bill Davis Stadium. The Buckeyes' last nine games of the season are at home.

tough loss...MSU hit the ball well..they are in the top 30 nationally in Batting AVG. If we can take 3 of 4 against Minny and PSU, we will be right there. Top 2 in the league is a must..that BYE in the tourney is huge!!!

Our RPI is around 72, and an at large is pretty much out of the question.

Just for the sake of argument...If we won all of our remaining games, and lost in the finals of the big 10 tourney; i'm afraid we still would'nt have quite enough of a resume to get an at large.

I think its Big 10 tourney champs or bust..
