Senior closer Trace Dempsey broke the OSU all-time saves record with his 30th Sunday afternoon

COLUMBUS, Ohio
- Senior pitcher Ryan Riga threw eight scoreless innings, while classmate closer Trace Dempsey broke the Ohio State career saves record in the ninth with his 30th in a 3-0 shutout victory over Michigan State Sunday afternoon on a chilly afternoon at Nick Swisher Field at Bill Davis Stadium. With their first B1G series win, the Buckeyes improve to 14-6 and 2-1 in conference play, while the Spartans fall to 9-11 overall and 1-2 in the Big Ten.
"We scored runs in different ways today using our speed, power and execution," said head coach Greg Beals. "Our conference has very good pitching and we will need to manufacture runs like we did vs. the Spartans. The story today was Ryan Riga. He's a Friday starter pitching on Sunday and he was tremendous again this afternoon. Michigan State is a solid ball club and our conference is going to be a battle every weekend this spring."
Riga, a native of Fairfield, Ohio, improved to 4-1 in five starts, matching his season wins total from a year ago. In eight scoreless frames, he scattered six hits with two walks and five strikeouts. Dempsey closed out the game to pick up his fourth save to break the all-time record held by former Buckeye Jake Hale, who tallied 29 from 2006-09. "It's a great honor to have this accomplishment but I wouldn't be in this situation if it wasn't for my teammates," Dempsey said. "Riga was lights out today and I'm happy the coaching staff can trust me to finish off the win. We played good baseball and we need to continue to improve every day."
