To follow up the previous discussion, it probably isn't the smartest thing to come to an Ohio State fan website and attempt to convince people that our AD practices poor business tactics while our biggest rival sets the bar for the NCAA. I'm no fan of Michigan athletics, but I'm not that stupid...

Without trying to get too into the weeds or off on a tangent, let me just add that as a state insitution, neither Michigan nor Ohio State should be following "normal" business practices when it comes to borrowing money. If an AD has to siphon money off the rest of the school, that can be seen in part as taxpayer's money and should generally be avoided. State universities are something of a unique hybrid between regular businesses and government and it shouldn't be assumed that they should run on the exact model of either one.

Where has any Buckeye fan suggested that siphoning money away from the university's general fund is OK? That was a straw man erected by a "Michigan man" -- and a pretty feeble attempt it was.

I agree with you, and that's why I'm glad OSU did NOT siphon money from the rest of the school!

million seat licensing goal. It has raised $13.2 million in
naming opportunities for the new building and hopes to raise
another $10-$12 million through additional naming opportunities..
The remainder of the $84 million construction costs will be paid
with a $15 million appropriation from the state of Ohio and bond
sales. After construction, the arena will be self-supporting.
No tuition money is being used to pay for this project.

The total cost of the renovation project is $194 million. Nearly 80 percent of that figure will be covered by the sale of the 81 Hospitality Suites and the 2,500 Club Seats on the west side of the stadium. Naming Rights gifts and revenue generated from increased ticket sales and concession income will cover the remaining 20 percent. No tax dollars or state or university money was used.

During most UM board discussions of facilities, that propaganda is handed out to ease their envy of OSU's facilities. My guess is most accepted those falsehoods as fact.

And where did I suggest you did? I read the argument and I know what you're all saying. It's my take (admittedly not backed up by practical experience) on the runnings of an athletic department, not a drive-by firebombing of OSU's.

HtM... here is the context of the 'borrowing' subtopic, which has been refuted. Your comments (perhaps unintentionally, or non-specific to OSU) got lumped together with s_m's repetitive falsehoods.

They will not borrow from the school or go into the red or even the black to get projects done.

Sorry we can't be like Ohio State and borrow from the school and go into massive debts just to keep up with the Jones'.

Ahhh-duh. Ohio State goes into the red, you don't even break even, you spend more than you take in. I'm more than proud that Michigan- which is first and foremost an ACADEMIC institution- isn't willing to go into the red or borrow from university in order to just keep up with the Jones'.
