Michael Phelps - How many gold medals in Beijing?

That relay was pretty sick. Phelps set a new American record with his split in the first leg. Lezak then turned in the fastest split ever in the anchor leg to steal that one away. Half the field smashed the world record in that final - a world record that had been set in the semifinal round by the US team without Phelps.

That relay was awesome! Those guys have been wanting to bring the Olympic gold for that relay back to the States for a long time now!

Jason showed the doubters that he can still bring it home, even though he's the oldest member of the men's team! Awesome, awesome, split! Couldn't have happened to a nicer guy, either.

And I loved GWG saying that the "Frenchies were talking stuff"! Classic!

Re: When you're the world-record holder but you cannot hold a lead in your specialty, that's not good. When that happens after you've talked smack, that's worse. At least it took a superhuman swim to beat Bernard.
Afterward I asked the French technical team director, Claude Fauquet, about Bernard's prediction.
"Well," Fauquet said, "I think he got it wrong."
ESPN - 'No way' turns into 'no quit' for Lezak, men's relay team - Olympics

No s h i t !...

Ann Arbor has been THE place to train since Phelps and his coach moved there after Athens. A lot of people relocated there to train with them. I know a lot of those swimmers personally, including the ones competing in Beijing. They're great and talented people! All of them were here back in April at the OSU Grand Prix meet.

Might as well get used to it. I can't remember the last Olympics that didn't have a U-M swimmer and/or a swimmer born and raised in Michigan. Usually there's both.
UM swimmers in the Olympics every time they had one except - 1980 (boycott) and between 1904 and 1928.

I'll be sure to remember that while I'm in The Shoe on Nov 22nd watching us kick your asses for the fifth straight time...

Does it bother anyone that this guy is scUM? :p

Not really. The guy is representing the United States and I support all of our athletes in the Olympics regardless of what college they attended. I want the US to win as many medals as possible and he definitely will increase our medal count.

I guess I would even root for Mike Hart if he was competing in the Olympics. Unfortunately for him there is no event or competition for "biggest asshole"; therefore, I'm not worrying about him since he'll probably never qualify for any other Olympic event.

There are Olympic bicycling events, but unfortunately for Hart, none of them are for stationary bikes.

I knew there had to be a reason no one really gives a fuck about swimming.

That was pretty awesome. My wife, who claims she has no interest in the Olympics, was sitting up in bed and cheering the anchor leg of that one. I liked the guy on the team who said something like that the other guys were saying that the "Frenchies" were talking stuff but he didn't want to hear it because he would do his talking after they won the gold. USA! USA! USA!
