Meyer's coaching staff predictions

    • OK, most of us pretty much assume that Urban Meyer will be named head coach sometime after The Game. Let's discuss wh you think he'll keep and who he'll shitcan wehn he comes on board. Here is the current staff:

    HC: Luke Fickell
    AHC: None
    OC: Jim Bollman
    QB: Nick Siciliano
    RB: Dick Tressel
    WR: Stan Drayton
    TE: John Peterson
    OL: Jim Bollman
    DC: Jim Heacock/Paul Haynes
    DL: Jim Heacock
    LB: Mike Vrabel
    CB: Taver Johnson
    S: Paul Haynes
    ST: Dick Tressel

    My understanding is that we cannot have more than 10 full-time coaches (not counting strength and conditioning). With Meyer coming in, we know at least one person will have to be let go...most here assume/hope it will be Bollman. I think Meyer fires Bollman and brings in Studrawa. I also thinks he fires Heacock to make room for Fickell as AHC, DL coach, and co-DC with Haynes. I think he keeps Drayton, Vrabel, Johnson, and Haynes. Not sure what I think he'll do with Siciliano, Peterson, and the Tressels...assuming he keeps these guys, too, here's what I forsee as our staff in 2012:

    HC: Urban Meyer
    AHC: Luke Fickell
    OC: Greg Studrawa
    QB: Nick Siciliano
    RB: Dick Tressel
    WR: Stan Drayton
    TE: John Peterson
    OL: Greg Studrawa
    DC: Paul Haynes/Luke Fickell
    DL: Luke Fickell
    LB: Mike Vrabel
    CB: Taver Johnson
    S: Paul Haynes
    ST: Dick Tressel

    If Meyer brings Speils in like some rumor have him doing, then Speils would be LB coach and Vrabel would move to DL coach, freeing up Fickell to be AHC and C-DC only.
     
    I don't see Nick Siciliano or Peterson being asked to stay on.

    Something tells me Dick Tressel might retire. I'd love for him to stay on, with the backs he's helped, I think Meyer and him would work great together.

    I believe that more coaches than just Bollman will be gone. I'm sure part of the deal with Ohio State has to be to let him hire "his staff". Drayton (who Meyer hired at Florida) may be the only "lock" to stay. In addition to LSU offensive line coach Greg Studwara, I saw North Carolina State linebackers coach Jon Tenuta mentioned along with Chris Spielman. I really don't think Kirk Herbstreit would be in the mix; even if hes' actually offered an assistant coaching job (and I don't think he would be) I believe he'd turn it down. He's too far up the "food chain" with ABC/ESPN and I don't believe that he would resign for a significantly lower paying job.

    I'll go that far now. I don't see him keeping Dick Tressel on at all. Nor do I see him keeping Siciliano. Stan Drayton was Urban's RB coach, not WR coach at UF, so I can see him returning to that role.

    For what it's worth (not much), Drayton and Vrabel were at the Hall of Fame Grill hosting some recruits following the game on Saturday. If the conspiracy theorist inside me is correct in assuming the Meyer succession plan has been in place for some time, that could bode well for them being retained on the staff.

    Than again, it could mean absolutely nothing, which is the more likely implication.

    In addition to Drayton, Heacock is the only other coach currently on the staff that Meyer has worked with previously.
