When is the heat gonna come down on the NFL like it has for MLB for performance enhancers?

I don't know. I'm honestly amazed that it hasn't already. But then again the NFL didn't have one of it's players go in front of Congress and wag his finger, only to get popped for Roids 3 months later like the MLB did.

What I hope for is maybe some enterprising scientist is out there working on a easier to administer, more accurate test to detect HGH and other designer roids....

I understand that there are other factors in play here.

NFL records aren't being broken because of steroid use like they are in MLB, and records in generally hold more meaning in baseball than football. Plus, even though the testing that is done is largely meaningless, at least football has had something in place for a while while the MLB players' union successfully held off and diluted any testing for baseball.

The issue of performance enhancers has severely damaged the marketability of MLB, while the NFL has skated right by. Rumors and innuendo follow pretty much anybody in the MLB who shows any kind of strength or power (and perhaps deservedly so) - meanwhile, in the NFL the same conditions for rumor and innuendo exist - perhaps even moreso. Merriman, while not yet a hall of fame-caliber player like the kind that are under fire in baseball, is a high profile NFL player and the kind of player whose transgression could kickstart the discussion of substance abuse in the NFL.

There was one other piece in the linked article that was unintentionally hilarious - about Merriman's teammate Foley.

Police said that Foley, who, according to his agent, David Levine, is currently unable to walk or stand without assistance, had been partying in downtown San Diego and registered a blood-alcohol level of .233 percent, nearly three times California's legal limit of .08 percent.
Well I would say that Levine has described Foley pretty much to a "T" - with 0.233 percent BAL I'd think that anyone would have substantial difficulty walking or standing without assistance..

Of course there is a dark side to this.
The charges carry enhancements that include being charged with DUI within 10 years of a prior conviction and having a blood-alcohol level exceeding .15.

NFL NOTEBOOK
Report: Merriman faces four-game suspension
Monday, October 23, 2006
FROM WIRE REPORTS

San Diego Chargers linebacker Shawne Merriman has been notified he will be suspended for four games for violating the NFL?s steroids and related substances policy, according to a report on ESPN?s Web site.
Merriman?s positive test was "definitely for steroids ? not one of those supplement deals," said a source with knowledge of Merriman?s suspension.
Merriman?s suspension originally was to be announced last Tuesday when two other players ? the Atlanta Falcons? Matt Lehr and the Detroit Lions? Shaun Rogers ? were suspended for violating the policy. But Merriman reserved the right to appeal his suspension, so it was not announced.
