Merged: CFBNews Previews USC, Transfers, and Losses

USC has talent... the schedule is not easy, however I don't know if I'd call it tough...

The big question is the loss of Chow... if they had him I doubt any team would come close to beating them, we'll see how the new OC does... lord knows he has talent to work with (10's across the board seems a bit high, you can argue numbers, however the fact is they are a loaded team)...

2004 Fun Stats:
- Second half scoring: USC 224 - Opponents 65

That was by far the Trojans' biggest weapon. The adjustments that Chow would make during halftime would freaking CRIPPLE the opponent. It's just gross what an amazing OC Chow was.

Uh oh, Chow's not around anymore. They're a damn good team, very deserving of #1, but they have a huge handicap compared to last year, and someone is going to take them down. (Ohio State in the Rose Bowl PLEEEEASE!)
I don't think that stat was intending to show Chow's halftime prowess. That really wasn't his specialty. USC's first half scoring was actually higher (272). As you can see, that is pretty consistent.

That stat was attempting to show Carroll's halftime prowess. His D only gave up 65 points in the 2nd halves of games, compared to 104 points in the first half.

They both had their moments last year. Chow's success in isolating Reggie Bush made the difference in the opener against Va. Tech, and Carroll's halftime adjustments stuffed Stanford in the second half.

I remember reading that one of your other DTs might be in trouble. How is the overall picture at DT looking now that the dust has settled a bit...
Hard to say, really. The DT spot is still up in the air. Nosetackle is set with Sedrick Ellis, but any of 3 guys could be starting with him. It's that wonderful world of unproven talent. I expect the run defense to be fine because of our LBs.

The key will be how well we can generate a pass rush. The last two years we had the luxury of being able to generate a fierce pass rush with just our DL thanks to guys like Cody, Patterson, and Udeze.

This year our DEs are going to be the known commodity with Jackson a returning CFBNEWs.com 1st team freshman-AA and either 2-year starter Frostee Rucker or stud sophomore Jeff Schweiger on the other side.

It will not be last year's defense, but it has the potential to be a very strong unit under Carroll.

i think that you could credit a bit of the 65 second half points allowed to Chow, because he always just ran the hell out of the ball in the second half... granted, they usually had a pretty decent lead by then, but running the ball controls the clock, and keeps the other team off the field...

They are not the same team that won back to back titles. The coaching losses alone change the dynamic of the team. Then look at all the player losses, graduation and other! It will be just about impossible to maintain an undefeated season! But they could still lose a game and make it again to the Rose Bowl! I think they have a very good year but don't go undefeated! Make a BCS game but not the Rose Bowl!

OL Byers to miss 2005 season. He was ranked the #1 recruit in the entire country by some services in 2004. He was projected to start this year, but he'll be replaced by Lutui, who was last year's starter. They're still not lacking on the O-line, since Winston Justice returns this year.

Lineman Byers out for season

By Scott Wolf, Staff Writer

USC offensive lineman Jeff Byers, who was projected to be a starter this year, is expected to miss the season because his hip did not heal properly following offseason surgery and will require another operation.

Byers will undergo surgery in his home state, Colorado, in mid-July, according to USC coach Pete Carroll.

Byers suffered a torn labrum in his hip against Notre Dame and missed the Orange Bowl. He underwent arthroscopic surgery in the offseason and was expected to compete in spring practice but was sidelined again after a few practices.

"It looks like he'll be out (for the season)," Carroll said. "It just didn't heal right."

The recurring injury frustrated Byers during spring practice.

"The doctors cleared me, but now they won't clear me," Byers said. "It's real frustrating. You feel like your letting everyone else down." <!-- cdaFreeFormDetailByName.strSQL = FreeForm_GetTextBySectionIDPaperID @Name = 'ArticleAd', @PaperID = '200', @SectionID = '29583', @ArticleID = '2943100', @Filter = 'Section', @LiveFilter = '1', @DateTimeContext = '6/30/2005 5:41:40 AM' --><!-- ArticleAd not found -->

Byers started four games last season at left guard after coming to USC as a center. Because he did not redshirt last year, he will be a sophomore when he returns in 2006.

With Byers out, USC will move Taitusi Lutui to left guard. Lutui started every game at right tackle last year but was beaten out by returning lineman Winston Justice during spring practice. Sophomore Drew Radovich is another possibility.

Two other USC starters -- tight end Dominique Byrd and fullback Brandon Hancock -- will undergo arthroscopic knee surgery this week and be out at least five weeks, which means they probably will miss the start of training camp.

"There's a little cleaning up to do (on their knees)," Carroll said. "They should be OK."

Wide receiver Dwayne Jarrett's been nursing a thigh injury this summer, but Carroll said he expects Jarrett to be OK.

Byers is the third starter USC has lost since the spring. Defensive tackle Manuel Wright decided to turn pro after becoming academically ineligible, and cornerback Eric Wright withdrew from school after police discovered 136 ecstasy pills in his apartment.

Byrd tore knee ligaments two years ago and missed seven games. He also broke his kneecap last summer and missed the first four games.

Hancock missed last season after tearing knee ligaments in the 2004 Rose Bowl. Meanwhile, quarterback Rocky Hinds has not yet appealed USC's denial of his transfer release to UNLV.
