Men's Basketball Buckeye Tidbits 2007-08 Season

just a pipe dream, and probably a bad one at that but I'd love to see Thad come out and let these guys go Fab 5 style and just run.

With as hesitant as the freshman have been to pull the trigger, and how we have struggled all year getting into and executing offensive sets, it'd be really refreshing to see them just push the ball and try and shoot within 10 seconds of the shot clock. Kind of Phoenix style where they look for a shot within 7 seconds.

Again, pipe dream, and probably not the message Thad would want to send, but it could give the guys more confidence to make plays and not be so afraid of taking a bad shot.

All these kids can play, they just haven't put it together. With really nothing to lose at this point, I'd love to see them come out relaxed and looking to gun.

Honestly with a second pg on this team I would think we would see more of this as I think Turner, Lighty, Hunter, Diebler would all excel in that style of play...But not sure KK would excel or play like he is now and Butler would die...

I know Butler would die, which means PJ Hill would get some minutes, but we know what we have by protecting Butler and playing a slow down, half-court tempo game.

Again, I know it isn't going to happen, and I certainly don't know more than Thad. I just think it'd be great to see the guys play a style where they don't have to think. Just get the ball and go, don't be afraid to take bad shots, and play hard.

Buckeyes' only constant: frustration

Tuesday, March 04, 2008 Doug Lesmerises

Plain Dealer Reporter
Columbus -- Evan Turner's voice cracked, and the Ohio State freshman let loose a sigh 29 games in the making.
With their season falling apart, and after consecutive tight losses to two ranked teams had encouraged them, how had the Buckeyes played with such lackluster energy for parts of Saturday's 14-point loss at Minnesota?
"I don't even know. I can't tell you. Geez. It just happens," Turner said Monday, his evident emotion forcing him to take a breath. "Just losing those past four games . . . unbelievable."
@StoryAd
Answers are in short supply in Columbus, but the wear and tear is obvious. With Purdue coming to Value City Arena tonight, the fact that the 17-12 Buckeyes, with one win in the last four weeks, are desperate for a victory goes without saying. Wins over the Boilermakers (23-6, 14-2 in the Big Ten, tied for the conference lead) and Michigan State this week still wouldn't be enough to solidify a NCAA Tournament bid. So a premature postmortem of the two-time defending Big Ten champions has begun.
How much has this team underachieved so far versus how much was it overrated? Either way, it was obvious Monday that as much as this season has bewildered the fans, it has eaten up some players more.
"The hardest part is if we were going out and playing hard every game and losing, that wouldn't be as bad as how it is now," senior Matt Terwilliger said, "with the roller coaster of intensity.

Time is now for Ohio State to make NCAA push
Tuesday, March 4, 2008
BY Mike Popovich
REPOSITORY SPORTS WRITER

At a time in the season when most postseason hopefuls start peaking, Ohio State has fallen fast.

This was not the direction the Buckeyes were heading a few weeks ago when a third straight Big Ten title and a decent NCAA tournament seed was still within reach. Four straight losses later, the league championship is out of the question and the NIT looks more like reality.

Ohio State's best detour out of this predicament will be to end the regular season with victories over Purdue and Michigan State, and winning a couple of games in the Big Ten tournament. The Boilermakers, however, can stay atop the league and further doom the Buckeyes' already-fading NCAA hopes with a win tonight at Value City Arena.

Head Coach Thad Matta labeled Ohio State's game at Northwestern three weeks ago as "must play well" instead of "must win." The Buckeyes (17-12, 8-8 Big Ten) have not won since they beat the Wildcats on Feb. 13.

Obviously a lot of things have changed.

Men's Basketball
Buckeyes Shortcomings on Offensive End Explains Shortage of Wins
By John Porentas
On the off-chance you haven't been paying attention, the OSU men's basketball team has won 17 games this year. Not bad, but with just two games remaining on the regular-season schedule, that's a tad behind the 35 games the Buckeyes won last season or even the 26 they won the year before.
If you have been paying attention this year you're probably a bit disappointed. If you haven't been paying attention this year, you probably didn't know about those two previous seasons either. If you fall into that second category, Eldon Miller is gone, Thad Matta is the basketball coach now, the Buckeyes have won two-straight Big Ten championships and made it to the Final Four last year. This season isn't quite measuring up to the previous two.

Men's Basketball
Hoops Week
By Tony Gerdeman
This edition of the Hoops Week in Review is dedicated to perseverance and how much it sucks.
Recapping the Buckeyes' Week
The Buckeyes went 0-2 last week (actually, 1-1 if you want to count moral victories, which we might have to start doing).

Sense of foreboding

It was a strange 15 minutes interviewing Matt Terwilliger and Evan Turner before practice today. They admirably fielded repeated questions from the media about what?s wrong with their team without shedding much new light on the subject.
The way they looked, however, told me a lot. I think it does, anyway.
They still looked stunned from Saturday?s loss at Minnesota. Their eyes were glassy enough that it seemed they could have cried. Terwilliger has a wry sense of humor that usually finds its way into at least one answer; none on this day. Turner said it was ?unbelievable? the Buckeyes have lost four games in a row.
Turner was completely different after the game at Indiana last Tuesday night. It had been another tough, narrow loss to a good Big Ten team, but the Buckeyes had put up a fight, Turner had played pretty well and he was decent spirits despite the loss. His team was hanging in there.

Bob Hunter commentary: Buckeyes get over hump for once in a close one

Wednesday, March 5, 2008 6:50 AM
By Bob Hunter

The Ohio State men's basketball team has been close to a good season. It has been close to some big victories. If you think about it that way, it is close to a high national ranking and a Big Ten title. It might be as close to the top 10 as any 18-12 team you've seen. Close doesn't count, of course. Close doesn't get you much more than longer and harder practices, some sleepless nights and maybe a few fist holes in the bedroom wall.
For what it's worth, close usually commands respect from your opponents because they can sense the danger. They can see how close you are to beating a good team and they don't want to be there when you find out how to turn close into a win. That's the unfortunate circumstance that befell first-place Purdue last night. The unlucky Boilermakers happened to be in Value City Arena when the Buckeyes made the critical plays down the stretch that they hadn't been making.
"I knew we had it in us," senior Jamar Butler said.

Buckeyes have a bye

Wisconsin?s win over Penn State and Minnesota?s loss at Indiana last night clinched for Ohio State the No.5 seed and final first-round bye in the Big Ten tournament next week.
Regardless of whether Wisconsin wins the regular-season title outright or shares it with Purdue, Indiana or both, the Buckeyes control tiebreakers with Minnesota should they finish in a tie for fifth place in the final standings. Ohio State has a one-game lead on the Gophers with each having one game to play.
