It's Never Too Early, Baby!

Vitale's best bets to make 2007 Final Four

ESPN college basketball analyst Dick Vitale gives his five best bets to make it to the 2007 Final Four at the Georgia Dome:
1. NORTH CAROLINA. Roy Williams will get his second championship in three seasons. He has great returning talent, led by Tyler Hansbrough, and great diaper dandies coming in, including Ty Lawson.
2. FLORIDA. Billy Donovan returns his entire starting five from last season's champions, but it is so tough to repeat in college basketball.
3. KANSAS. The Jayhawks are loaded with Brandon Rush and Julian Wright. Newcomers Darrell Arthur and Sherron Collins will help.
4. OHIO STATE. The big question is, how long will Greg Oden be out of the lineup following wrist surgery? When he is in the lineup, Thad Matta's Buckeyes will be tough.
5. UCLA. Jordan Farmar is gone, but Darren Collison should step up. Ben Howland's team could return to the Final Four. -- Atlanta Journal-Constitution

Street & Smith?s College Basketball 2006-07 Yearbook, due to hit newsstands Oct. 10, will have Ohio State ranked ninth in the nation and second in the Big Ten. It also will have freshman Greg Oden as a first-team All-American and an all-conference pick.

The magazine has defending national champion Florida, Kansas, North Carolina, Pittsburgh and Duke as its preseason top five. The Buckeyes? game Nov. 29 with the Tar Heels in Chapel Hill, N.C., already looms large.
Why not Ohio State over Wisconsin, which writer Jack Ebling calls a "darkhorse Final Four favorite"?

"The league?s most gifted team could be its best by the end of March," Ebling wrote. "But Big Ten titles are won in January and February, too. For that to happen, a man-child (Greg Oden) might have to perform far beyond his years."
The cover that should be available in Ohio has Oden palming a ball while wearing his McDonald?s All-American jersey.

Why should football preclude the basketball season? Like, at all? This is precisely why we can't fill the Schott until late January--it's bullshit. The team rattles off eleven or so wins in a row to start the year in '05, and it was a treat if we could get 14,000 in an arena built to hold just under 20. Makes it that much more remarkable that Matta continues to convince kids to play here...

When football ends, OSU title hopes won't
BY DUSTIN DOW | ENQUIRER STAFF WRITER
Questions? Yeah, there are a few questions up in Columbus about the prospects for this season's Ohio State basketball team. Fortunately for the Buckeyes, most of them have to do with how good this team can be under third-year coach Thad Matta.
When will Greg Oden be ready to play, and how big will his impact be?
At 7-feet, Oden should be a dynamic force inside during his first season of college basketball. Street & Smith just named him a first-team preseason All-American. Of course, we're talking about a player whose talent and body could place him atop the list of potential NBA draftees by season's end. The only drawback, then, is that injured right wrist, which will cause Oden to miss the early part of the season. Oden should be ready by the time the Big Ten season begins in January.
What about everyone else? Beyond Oden, the freshman class is loaded with a Who's Who list, including Mike Conley at point guard, and Daequan Cook and David Lighty at the other guards. They're going to be significant factors, but this team wasn't exactly struggling without them. Recall that a few players are back from last season's Big Ten championship team, including Ron Lewis, Jamar Butler and Matt Terwilliger. Ohio State's most difficult task might be having to form one identity in November and December and then adjusting it when Oden joins the lineup.
Is the Final Four realistic? A national title? Matta has won four regular-season conference championships at three different schools, including Xavier, and has been to an Elite Eight with the Musketeers. He knows how to win and beat expectations. It wouldn't be surprising to see this team in Atlanta.
