A battery of tests performed on Tuesday morning confirmed Philadelphia quarterback Donovan McNabb suffered a bruised chest in the Monday night loss at Atlanta, and the availability of the Eagles' star for this week likely will be determined by how he responds in the next few days.

Coach Andy Reid said McNabb had undergone an MRI, CT scan and X-rays and that all of the tests indicated the bruised chest. There may be further tests in coming days. The Eagles play San Francisco on Sunday at Lincoln Financial Field.

"We knew he was hurting," Reid said of McNabb. "It wasn't nearly as bad last night as it was this morning. Obviously, it tightened up on him. But he felt comfortable playing. He never said a word about it."

Reid said that, in cases of chest injuries, the Eagles take "extra precautions" in evaluating the injury and doing follow-up testing. League rules stipulate that the Eagles don't have to officially update McNabb's injury status until Wednesday.

McNabb was injured on the Eagles' first possession of the game on a play in which he was hit on his left side by Falcons defensive end Brady Smith and in his chest by tackle Chad Lavalais. His deep pass up the left sideline, intended for Terrell Owens, clearly was affected by the impact, and was intercepted by D'Angelo Hall.

When he went to the sideline, McNabb removed his pads, did some stretching and was examined by the team's medical staff. He returned on the next series.

Under heavy pressure all evening, as the Falcons generally played an eight-man front and blitzed him liberally, McNabb absorbed a fierce beating. He completed 24 of 45 passes for 257 yards and one touchdown, but had three turnovers and registered just one run rush, for no yards.

Reid acknowledged there was far too much pressure on McNabb and allowed that the injury may have played a role in the quarterback's seeming reluctance to run.

"He was in a little bit of pain," Reid said. "I don't know if that had any affect on his decisions to run or not run. It didn't look like there was a lot of room to run, [but] the injury might have affected it."

I really think the Eagles are going to fall back to earth this year. Regardless of the reports of dickweed errr...T.O. and McNabb making up, that had a major effect on that teams chemistry. Losing Simon and now Westbrooks contract squabbles don't help things either.

losing Simon? if i remember correctly, we cut his ass off the team.

Second of all, Westbrook will get his longterm contract (he seemed to play well against Atlanta) and McNabb will rebound from the chest thing. We have a good team all around this year.

McNabb didn't practice Wednesday because of a bruised chest, but the five-time Pro Bowl quarterback said he'll play in Philadelphia's home opener against San Francisco on Sunday.

``Nothing will stop me from being on that field,'' said McNabb, who was injured in the first quarter in the Eagles' 14-10 season-opening loss at Atlanta on Monday night.
If McNabb can't play -- he's listed as questionable -- longtime backup Koy Detmer isn't a lock to get the start. Detmer shared reps with third-string quarterback Mike McMahon in practice, and coach Andy Reid wouldn't select a potential starter.

``We'll see as the week goes on,'' Reid said. ``I'll evaluate it and see what we want to do with it. I know both do a nice job.''

At least the latest problem doesn't involve Terrell Owens. The All-Pro wideout has reconciled with McNabb after a protracted feud, and set aside his desire -- for now -- for a new contract.
Neither Detmer nor McMahon are going to cause any trouble if they don't get the nod against the 49ers.

Detmer has started eight games in his nine seasons with the Eagles. He led Philadelphia to a 38-17 victory in San Francisco in a Monday night game three years ago, one week after McNabb broke his ankle. Detmer threw for 227 yards and two touchdowns against the 49ers before injuring his elbow and missing the rest of the season.

McMahon started seven games in four seasons with Detroit before signing with the Eagles in the offseason. He isn't as familiar with Philadelphia's version of the West Coast offense, but outperformed Detmer in the preseason.
``We're going to take the reps the way they want us to and see how it shakes out,'' said Detmer, who probably has maintained his status as the backup because he's the holder for Pro Bowl kicker David Akers.
Detmer expects to be on the sideline watching McNabb.
``He's a warrior,'' Detmer said. ``We've seen him play through all kinds of things, broken ankles, everything. If he can walk, he can go. He will be out there.''
McMahon said he's comfortable with the Eagles' complex offense.

``It's nothing too difficult,'' he said. ``You just have to prepare and go out and help the offense move the ball. Don't do anything too fancy and move the chains.''

McNabb didn't miss any plays after a crushing hit from Chad Lavalais sent him wincing to the sideline, but he struggled the rest of the game against the Falcons.

``I don't want to make excuses,'' McNabb said. ``I just didn't do my job the way I'm used to.''

Reid said McNabb doesn't have any structural damage in his sternum. Last season, Titans quarterback Steve McNair missed eight games with a sternum injury that eventually required surgery.

``It's bruised and a matter of it calming down,'' Reid said. ``We are not going to put him out there in a situation where he could be injured.''

McNabb has played through pain in the past. He broke his ankle in the first quarter of a game against Arizona in 2002, stayed in and threw four touchdowns. He had trouble playing with an injured thumb in 2003, but didn't miss any time.

``It's just a process you go through with bumps and bruises,'' he said. ``If I'm out there, I feel like I can help the team as much as possible.''

Center Hank Fraley said the offensive line has to protect McNabb better.
``I won't be surprised if he plays. He's played on a broken ankle,'' Fraley said. ``We want him as clean as possible and take the least amount of hits.''

McNabb said he stopped wearing a flak jacket two years ago, but would consider putting one on this week. Neither McNabb nor Reid wanted to comment on the hit that injured McNabb, but it's clear both thought it wasn't entirely clean. Lavalais leveled McNabb with his helmet.

personally i think that westbrook is overrated and i know youre gonna disagree with me cause ive seen your posts and you worship the ground that the eagles walk on. he is a good running back but he is not as good as people say. i'm not sure they should give him the long term deal he wants. i mean everyone says hes a great receiving rb, but im sure if you went and signed shaun alexander and they run the same formations and plays then im sure any other running back on this team would get more receptions than most other running backs in the league. also, im sorry to break this to eagles fans, but they aren't gonna make it to the super bowl again, i dont know about the nfc championship either. the falcons are a better team this year, they have a better defense and the emergence of michael jenkins gives vick a potential playmaker that he can throw a 50 yard bomb to. you could make a case that they lost because jeremiah trotter didn't play, but as i see it, a new team has emerged and you've gotta get better players because they can go get better players with the 12 million extra dollars that they have

NEW YORK -- Nine players were fined for their roles in a fight before Monday night's game between the Eagles and Falcons, with Atlanta defensive tackle Chad Lavalais drawing the biggest fine -- $7,500 -- for a hit on Donovan McNabb during the game.

McNabb was hit during the first quarter of Philadelphia's 14-10 loss to Atlanta on Monday.

Lavalais was fined for using his helmet on McNabb, who hurt his chest on the play. McNabb is questionable for Philadelphia's game Sunday against San Francisco because of the injury.

<!-- Len P. info -->
Lavalais' agent, Jimmy Sexton, told ESPN.com on Thursday that his client will appeal the fine.

<!-- Len P. info ends -->
"I'm not a fine guy, I don't go back and try to point fingers on what people did," McNabb said after he practiced Thursday. "If it didn't happen, it's not going to stop my preparation for San Francisco. It's nothing that's going to make me go out and buy a Wendy's triple-stacked cheeseburger. I'm not going to buy them any flowers or take somebody from the league out to eat."

For the pregame fight, which resulted in Falcons cornerback Kevin Mathis and Eagles linebacker Jeremiah Trotter being ejected before kickoff, both players got $5,000 fines. Also receiving a $5,000 hit was cornerback DeAngelo Hall for unsportsmanlike conduct for grabbing an opponent's facemask and then throwing the opponent's helmet.

Trotter said the NFL should discipline the referees who tossed him out of the game.

"They should have fined the referee," he said. "That's who they should have fined for that bad call. I do think referees should get fined, too, for making a bad call. There should be some disciplinary actions for the refs."

Two Falcons were fined $2,500 for entering a fight area, which made them active participants -- safety Keion Carpenter and cornerback-kick returner Allen Rossum. Safety Kevin McCadam got a $1,000 fine.

Along with Trotter, the three Eagles fined for entering a fight area were linebackers Keith Adams, Jason Short and Mike Labinjo.

"From what I saw, it was mostly their guys running their mouths, throwing the punches, ripping the helmets off, slamming them on the ground," Labinjo said.

Adams, Short and Labinjo all insisted they were trying to break up the fight. Short said "they've got nothing on me" and said he will appeal the fine.
"It doesn't pay to be the good guy, I guess," Adams said.

During warmups, Trotter apparently pushed Mathis, who responded with a punch. Hall also appeared to throw a punch. Then everyone got into it, forcing the officials to intervene.

Trotter and Mathis were ejected after the officials peered into the replay monitor, which is normally used to rectify disputed calls during the game. This time, it helped determine who started the fight and which players were involved.

Moments later, another brawl nearly broke out. As the Atlanta players were trotting back to the locker room, they noticed the Eagles gathering on the Falcons logo in the middle of the field.

The Falcons ran en masse back to the 50-yard line and fought for position with the Eagles, forcing the officials to separate the teams again. No punches were thrown, and both teams went off slowly in opposite directions to their respective locker rooms.

Trotter joked about the punishment, saying he was going to appeal all the way to the Supreme Court.

"Any of you know Matlock? Give me his number. I heard he's never lost cases," Trotter said.

PHILADELPHIA -- Donovan McNabb's bruised chest won't keep the quarterback out of the starting lineup for the Eagles' home opener Sunday against San Francisco.

Coach Andy Reid said Friday that McNabb would be in there "unless something crazy happens."

McNabb, who was injured in the first quarter in the Eagles' 14-10 season-opening loss at Atlanta on Monday night, practiced for the second straight day Friday. He looked fine during running drills, dropping back and making little-defended passes with ease.

McNabb didn't miss any plays after a crushing hit from Chad Lavalais sent him wincing to the sideline, but he struggled the rest of the game against the Falcons. Lavalais was fined $7,500 for using his helmet on McNabb.
McNabb missed practice Wednesday.
