Between Monday and Friday there are 11 more bowl games outside the College Football Playoff on the schedule.
Bowl games: 3-1 (3-1 National, 0-0 B1G)
Season record: 127-116 (55-55 National, 72-61 B1G)
The first bowl game of the season was a near miss for me. Northern Illinois kicked a field goal late against South Alabama to barely cover the spread on Saturday night. Since then, I picked the right side in the next three bowls.
My record for bowl season reflects games played through Wednesday 12/18.
Myrtle Beach Bowl: Coastal Carolina v. UTSA (-8.5) - Monday 12/23 11:00 a.m. ET - ESPN
Coastal Carolina will be playing in their home stadium in this bowl game, but that is where the luxuries end for the Chanticleers. Quarterbacks Ethan Vasko and Noah Kim have already announced they are entering the transfer portal, leaving third-string freshman quarterback Tad Hudson to take the first snaps of his collegiate career in this game.
Along with questions at quarterback, Coastal Carolina will also be missing a number of players on defense.

Prior to a 29-24 loss to Army in their final game of the regular season, UTSA had won three straight games. Along with his ability to throw the football, Owen McCown added a bit of a rushing element in the final third of the regular season. Not only have the Roadrunners found their rhythm on offense after starting the season 2-4, linebacker Jimmori Robinson and cornerback Zah Frazier should make things very difficult for a quarterback making his first start.
UTSA 42, Coastal Carolina 20
Famous Idaho Potato Bowl: Northern Illinois v. Fresno State (-2.5) - Monday 12/23 2:30 p.m. ET - ESPN
Monday’s second game has even more questions at quarterback than the opener.
Ethan Hampton of Northern Illinois and Fresno State’s Mikey Keene aren’t expected to play in Boise after entering the transfer portal following the end of the regular season. Northern Illinois does have the upset of the season in college football so far, beating Notre Dame in South Bend back in September.
The Huskies couldn’t capitalize on the momentum from the victory though, losing four of their next six games. At least Thomas Hammock’s team did show some signs of life late in the season, closing out their regular season schedule with three wins in their last four games.
Despite Fresno State being without Keene in this game, I do like the Bulldogs to win for a couple reasons. After head coach Jeff Tedford stepped down prior to the season, Tim Skipper was named the interim head coach for the season. I’m sure the team will want to send Skipper out as a winner after Matt Entz was hired recently to take over as head coach following the bowl game. The Bulldogs have also been strong in bowl games since 2017, winning their last five bowl appearances.
Fresno State wins on the blue turf in Boise on Monday afternoon.
Fresno State 24, Northern Illinois 17
Hawai’i Bowl: South Florida v. San Jose State (-4.5) - Tuesday 12/24 8:00 p.m. ET - ESPN
There is no better way to close out Christmas Eve than with the Hawai’i Bowl.
Lately it hasn’t been a guarantee that we’d be watching football from Honolulu the night before Christmas, since COVID and a cancellation in 2021 has led to this being just the third Christmas Eve Hawai’i Bowl since 2019. This year’s edition will have former Hawai’i quarterback Ken Niumatalolo on one sideline, coaching San Jose State.
Of South Florida’s six wins this year, none of them have come against a bowl team. The season for the Bulls might have gone a little differently had quarterback Byrum Brown not been injured in September. Even though Bryce Archie has done a respectable job filling in for Brown this season, it’s hard to see South Florida keeping pace with an explosive San Jose State offense.
Even without talented wide receiver Nick Nash, who is opting out of playing in this game to prepare for the NFL Draft, the Spartans are too much to handle.
San Jose State 38, South Florida 21
GameAbove Sports Bowl: Pitt (-7.5) v. Toledo - Thursday 12/26 2:00 p.m. ET - ESPN
The last positive thing to happen in Pitt’s season was when they returned 82 Kyle McCord interceptions for touchdowns to push their record to 7-0. Since then, the Panthers closed out the regular season with five straight losses.
It didn’t help Pitt that quarterback Eli Holstein was injured late in the regular season, leaving Nate Yarnell to shoulder the load over the last three games. Yarnell has already entered the transfer portal, and the status of Holstein is cloudy, so if he can’t play the Panthers will have to rely on their third-string quarterback.
Toledo won’t have to travel too far to get to this bowl game, as it is just up I-75 from the Glass City. Quarterback Tucker Gleason had his moments in his first season as starter, tossing 22 touchdowns and just seven interceptions. Jerjuan Newton was Gleason’s favorite target, hauling in 11 touchdown passes. The Rockets will need Gleason and Newton to be on their game in Detroit since Toledo has struggled to run the football this season.
Even though Pitt is the better team, they have a lot of uncertainty heading into this game. Between the status of Holstein, running back Desmond Reid coming into the game dinged up, and the confidence of the Panthers hanging by a thread following their close to the season.
The Rockets should be able to keep this game close since they’ll be playing with more fire with this almost being a home game, they just don’t have enough to earn the victory.
Pitt 27, Toledo 24
Rate Bowl: Rutgers v. Kansas State (-6.5) - Thursday 12/26 5:30 p.m. ET - ESPN
This will be one of the more interesting games of the early portion of the bowl season. The running back battle should be outstanding, as Kyle Monangai of Rutgers and Kansas State running back DJ Giddens have both rushed for at least 1,275 yards this season.
The Scarlet Knights rebounded from a four-game losing streak in the middle of the season, winning three of their last four games.
Unlike Rutgers, Kansas State slumped at the end of the regular season, losing three of their last four games. Playing in a non-CFP bowl on the day after Christmas has to be a disappointment for the Wildcats since they entered the season as one of the favorites to win the Big 12. Despite having some moments of electricity, quarterback Avery Johnson has had issues with accuracy and turnovers this season.
Greg Schiano teams are all about running the football, playing solid defense, and mixing in a little trickery. I could see the Scarlet Knights pulling out all the stops in this one, throwing Kansas State off their game. Rutgers grinds out a win in Phoenix, earning their second straight bowl win under Schiano.
Rutgers 24, Kansas State 20
68 Ventures Bowl: Arkansas State v. Bowling Green (-6.5) - Thursday 12/26 9:00 p.m. ET - ESPN
As of now, Bowling Green tight end Harold Fannin Jr. hasn’t announced that he is opting out of this game to prepare for the NFL Draft. Fannin had one of the best seasons ever seen by a tight end, catching 100 passes for 1,342 yards and nine touchdowns. If we’re being honest, Fannin was robbed for the Mackey Award, which went to Penn State tight end Tyler Warren. The Falcons have experienced quarterback Connor Bazelak throwing passes to Fannin.
I’m not nearly as impressed with Arkansas State as I am with Bowling Green. Quarterback Jaylen Raynor is inconsistent, the Red Wolves struggle to run the football, and they have a defense that can be leaky at times. As if that wasn’t enough to tip the scales in favor of the Falcons, Arkansas State is coached by Butch Jones. Bowling Green snaps a three-game bowl losing streak and earns their first bowl victory since 2014.
Bowling Green 34, Arkansas State 23
Armed Forces Bowl: Oklahoma (-7.5) v. Navy - Friday 12/27 12:00 p.m. ET - ESPN
Navy is coming off a 31-13 win over Army, their second straight victory over their rival. Quarterback Blake Horvath was responsible for four touchdowns in the victory, throwing for two and rushing for the other two scores. Despite preferring to keep the ball on the ground with their triple option offense, the Sooners will have to respect Horvath’s ability to throw the football when necessary.
Aside from a victory over Alabama, not much went right for Oklahoma this season. Quarterback Jackson Arnold was benched earlier in the year, freshman Michael Hawkins Jr. led the team to a win over Auburn before he also was benched, giving the job back to Arnold, who announced he was entering the transfer portal after the end of the regular season. Hawkins will be back behind center for the bowl game, but he won’t have much to work with at wide receiver, as no Oklahoma receiver has more than 324 yards receiving this year.
Despite Oklahoma having prep time and linebacker Danny Stutsman to try and slow down Navy’s option, the Midshipmen have been playing better football this year. Not only is confidence high after the win over Army, service academies have won their last five appearances in the Armed Forces Bowl.
I love taking the points in a game that Navy has a shot to win outright.
Navy 21, Oklahoma 17
Birmingham Bowl: Georgia Tech (-2.5) v. Vanderbilt - Friday 12/27 3:30 p.m. ET - ESPN
Georgia Tech and Vanderbilt have certainly been entertaining this season. The Yellow Jackets opened up the college football season by shocking Florida State in Ireland. Most recently Brent Key’s team took Georgia to eight overtimes before the Bulldogs were able to earn a 44-42 victory.
When healthy, quarterback Haynes King is tough to slow down. This year King has thrown for 11 touchdowns and just one interception, while adding 11 more scores on the ground.
Countering King is quarterback Diego Pavia. The New Mexico State transfer has 23 total touchdowns, and led the Commodores to one of the biggest upsets in school history this year, beating Alabama in Nashville. The issue for Vanderbilt is they have trouble playing from behind since it can be hard for them to generate points. Following a 4-2 start to the season, Vanderbilt has lost their last three games.
The Yellow Jackets make it four straight setbacks for the Commodores to end their 2024 season.
Georgia Tech 31, Vanderbilt 21
Liberty Bowl: Texas Tech v. Arkansas (-1.5) - Friday 12/27 7:00 p.m. ET - ESPN
Texas Tech has won their last three bowl appearances, but it is going to be tough for the Red Raiders to make it four wins in a row because of how much they’ll be missing in Memphis.
Quarterback Behren Morton won’t play in the game due to a shoulder injury, leaving true freshman Will Hammond to start. Along with being without Morton, wide receiver Micha Hudson is transferring to Texas A&M, while FAU hired offensive coordinator Zach Kittley. Even though there is no word on running back Tahj Brooks’ status for the game yet, it wouldn’t surprise me if he didn’t play, especially with how much will be missing from the offense.
Arkansas will also be missing a key player on their offense in this game. After catching 78 passes for 1,140 yards this year, wide receiver Andrew Armstrong opted out of playing in the game. At least for the Razorbacks, quarterback Taylen Green and Ja’Quinden Jackson sound like they’ll be on the field at the Liberty Bowl. Arkansas has a quality win over Tennessee this year, and have played a number of ranked teams tough.
Sam Pittman’s squad ends the season on a high note, setting the table for 2025.
Arkansas 28, Texas Tech 21
Holiday Bowl: No. 21 Syracuse (-10.5) v. Washington State - Friday 12/27 8:00 p.m. ET - FOX
At first this game looked like it was going to be tons of fun. Unfortunately the landscape of college football has chipped away at it. Washington State is losing two key components of their offense ahead of this game. Offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle is taking the same position at Oklahoma, and quarterback John Mateer is entering the transfer portal. Starting in place of Mateer will be Bryant transfer Zevi Eckhaus.
Unlike Washington State, Syracuse will have a full roster at their disposal. Head coach Fran Brown announced there are no key players opting out of the game. Ohio State transfer Kyle McCord will look to add to his stuffed stat sheet this season after entering this game with 4,326 yards passing and 29 passing touchdowns. The Cougars are going to have their hands full with McCord, running back LeQuint Allen, and the talented receiving corps the Orange will throw at them.
Syracuse 41, Washington State 23
Las Vegas Bowl: Texas A&M (-3.5) v. USC - Friday 12/27 10:30 p.m. ET - ESPN
The regular season certainly didn’t end the way Texas A&M was hoping it would. The Aggies fell to rival Texas 17-7, dashing Mike Elko’s hopes of making the SEC Championship Game in his first season in College Station.
At least the bowl appearance should help Marcel Reed, who will get some more practices under his belt. Reed was electric at times, totaling 18 touchdowns after taking over for Connor Weigman, who recently entered the transfer portal.
The seat of Lincoln Riley continues to get hotter. USC finished the regular season at 6-6, dropping a number of winnable close games. Now quarterback Miller Moss, receiver Zachariah Branch, and safety Zion Branch all have entered the transfer portal. It feels like USC can’t wait for this season to end, while Elko will have his team playing for pride.
Nic Scourton and the defense of the Aggies harrasses Jayden Maiava, who has had some turnover issues during his college career. The Trojans can’t handle the physicality they’ll see from Texas A&M.
Texas A&M 30, USC 20
