MBB: OSU Edges Illinois, 75-73

Ohio State (9-5, 1-0) sought to extend 5-game winning streak to 6 games by hosting Illinois (6-6, 0-1) to start 2016 on a positive note.
The Buckeyes got their 10th win with a 75-73 win over the Fighting Illini. The Buckeyes placed four players in double figures: were led by Marc Loving (27 pts, 7 rbs), JaQuan Lyle (14, 5 asst), Kieta Bates-Diop (11, 9 reb) and Kam Williams (10, 2 reb). Also of note, Kam Williams contributed 10 points, 8 in the 2nd half to provide needed production.
As good as the team played, there was a shortage of performance by Ohio State’s “big Men”; namely Trevor Thompson and Daniel Giddens. They combined for only 3 points and 5 rebounds; however, the duo did combine for 7 blocks.
The Buckeyes shot 42% (21-50) from the field, 33% (5-15) from 3-pt range and (72% (28-39 from the foul line. They had 42 rebounds, 11 of them offensive rebounds.
In contrast, the Illini were 26-65 (40%) from the field, 12-32 (37% from 3-pt range and 82% (9-11) from the line. Before you get too exercised about the disparity in the FT shooting, you need to consider that Illinois attempted half of their FGs from beyond the arc. That is not conducive to drawing fouls.
1st Half
The game didn’t start well for the Buckeyes; they missed their first seven shots and didn’t score their first FG until A.J. Harris made a layup at the 11:34 mark. Waiting until midway through the first half to score your first FG is usually not good, however, due to the Illini also being cold, the Buckeyes held a 16-8 lead at that point. Illinois was 3-12 t this point, so it wasn’t as if the nets were being singed at this point. Speaking of “cold starts”, JaQuan Lyle was 0-1 with 2 turnovers and 2 fouls.. in the first 1:40 of play.
Ohio State held a 30-26 lead at the half. The Buckeyes were 8-25 (32%) from the field, only 1-6 (17%) from 3-pt range, but an impressive 13-15 (87%) from the foul line, and grabbed 24 rebounds, 7 of them offensive! However, OSU turned the ball over 9 times.
Illinois was 10-29 (34%) from the field, 4-14 (29%) from 3-pt range and 2-3 (67%) from the free throw line. They had 13 rebounds.
2nd Half
Lyle had a better start to the 2nd half, making his 1st two FGs to push OSU’s lead to 34-26. Illinois just chipped away into the OSU lead, and finally took the lead 61-59 with 4:55 remaining.
Five consecutive points by Marc Loving moved OSU’s lead to 65-61 at the 2:21 mark. At the 1:00 mark, Illinois’ Malcolm Hill’s 2 FTs pulled them to within 2 points, 67-65. These were matched by JaQuan Lyle’s 2 FTs at the :47 point to get OSU’s lead back up to 4 points, 69-65. JaQuan finished the half as strongly s he started it by scoring 4 of OSU’s last 9 points. Marc Loving made 3 FTs in the last :06 to contribute to the final margin of 75-73.
The Buckeyes next game is Wednesday @ 9:00 PM ET in Evanston, IL against Northwestern.
