(Thad approves of his team’s shooting and rebounding.)

Ohio State looked to improve its record (12-8, 4-3) by hosting Penn State (11-9, 2-5) Monday night. That they did, by downing the sketchy shooting Nittany Lions 66-46.

Ohio State was the beneficiary of abysmal Penn State outside shooting, 13% (3-24). The Buckeyes shot well, rebounded well, but were plagued by turnovers. They played more passionate defense tonight, which is a good face to effort by this team. Well done.

The Buckeyes were led by an outstanding game by Kieta Bates-Diop (22 pts, 8 rebs, 4 blocks). He was ably supported by Jae’Sean Tate (15 pts, 4 rebs) and Marc Loving (10, 3 rbs). Daniel Giddens scored only 5 points, but grabbed 9 rebounds. The Buckeyes shot 46% (24-52) from the field, 42% (8-19) from 3-pt range and 71% (10-14) from the foul line. They had 41 rebounds, 6 of them offensive rebounds and 15 turnovers. Ohio State blocked 8 PSU shots.

Meanwhile, the Nittany Lions were 32% (19-59) from the field, 13% (3-24) from 3-pt range and only 40% (2-5) from the line. They grabbed 31 rebounds, 7 of them offensive and committed 11 turnovers. Penn State was led by Brandon Taylor (11 pts) and Jordan Dickerson (7).

1st Half

Ohio State skated through the first 18 minutes holding a 31-18 lead, based primarily on PSU’s horrid 3-pt shooting. The Nittany Lions were 2-16 from 3-pt range in the half, missing their first 3-pointers. The Buckeyes went into the break holding a 33-26 lead. It could have been better, but the Buckeyes were in a daze to end the half and were outscored 8-2 in the final 3:02.

The Buckeyes took a 5-4 lead at the 17:45 mark on a KBD 3-pt’er. Kieta and Marc Loving drove the offense as OSU stretched their lead to 15-6 at the midpoint. There were really no “runs” in the half with OSU just stretching the lead to 31-18, then drifted during the final 3 minutes to let PSU back into the game.

The Buckeyes were 12-27 (44%) from the field, 6-12 (50%) from 3-pt range, and were 3-4 (75%) from the free throw line. They grabbed 22 rebounds, only 3 of them offensive, and had 10 turnovers. Ohio State was led by Kieta Bates- Diop (8 points), Marc Loving (8 pts) and Jae’Sean Tate (7 pts). Daniel Giddens had 4 rebounds.

In contrast, Penn State was 11-30 (37%) from the field, 2-16 (13%) from 3-pt range and 2-5 (40%) from the free throw line. The Nittany Lions had 15 rebounds, 2 of them offensive and 4 turnovers.

2nd Half

Nothing remarkable happened early in the 2nd half. At the under-12 mark, OSU had outscored PSU 16-9 in the half to move their lead to 49-35. The good news is that Jae’Sean Tate had 6 of OSU’s 16 points during this stretch. PSU did do a nice job of pacing their scoring through the mid-point mark; they averaged one FG every 2 minutes. That is not putting too much pressure on Ohio State.

From the 13 minute to the 9 minute mark, OSU went on a 9-2 run to open then lead a bit (54-35), but a 6-0 PSU run over the next 1:35 worked into the Buckeye lead pretty quickly. Lazy (poor transition) defense by OSU aided and abetted this run. Thad took a time-out, got the team settled and they responded with a 7-0 run over the next 2:30 to move the lead back up to 61-43.

Things flattened out from the 5:30 to 3:46 mark with missed shots and turnovers far exceeding scoring (3 free throws by KBD). Ohio State clamped down on defense to close out the game. A Payton Banks 3-pointer at the :29 mark, were the only points scored by the Nittany Lions in the last 7:36. The Buckeyes blocked 5 PSU shots during this stretch.

I’ll have a more in depth post-mortem in the next day or two, be sure to check back. The Buckeyes next game is Thursday at @ 9:00 PM ET at Illinois.. You can watch the game on BTN and/or listen to it on 97.1. Go Buckeyes!
