Mayor’s wife challenges Breathalyzer test

The wife of Columbus Mayor Michael B. Coleman today accepted some responsibility for drunk driving last month, but not all. Frankie Coleman, 55, pleaded guilty this morning in Franklin County Municipal Court to drunk driving and failure to control, charges that stem from hitting a parked car in Bexley Oct. 20.
But she entered a plea of not guilty to the high test portion of the charge that would require her to spend at least three days in jail.
That charge specifies that Coleman's blood-alcohol level was 0.271 percent when she was arrested. State law requires three days in jail for any motorist convicted of driving with a blood-alcohol level of at least 0.17 percent.
The law considers motorists drunk if their blood-alcohol is at least 0.08 percent.
Coleman's lawyers are challenging the high blood-alcohol level, saying the Bexley police officer who administered her Breathalyzer test wasn't properly certified.
Municipal Court Judge Scott A. VanDerKarr held off on sentencing Coleman until after that charge could be debated in a hearing Dec. 6.
Mrs. Coleman declined to reporters afterward, issuing a written statement instead.
"I have already publicly stated that I made a mistake and I am willing to accept responsibility and the consequences for my poor judgment," her statement stated. "However, like any citizen, I have a right to assert any and all defenses to the remaining charge."

At least she didn't claim "she was just inspecting the city" like Buck Reinhart.

There are now 2 things that we now know about the Colemans:
1. She shouldn't drink and drive.
2. He shouldn't do any electrical work in their home.

Wait, I thought they gave another test at the police station, and she failed that one too. Your telling me that the whole police station isn't certified?

The Thursday night when she did it, I was over teaching Bible Study at a friend's house. We had a knock at the door, and it was a Coleman campaign worker who was canvassing the neighborhood asking for donations. The next morning I heard the news about Frankie Coleman and it was just so ironic. Here was some 20-something girl out trying to drum up support for the mayor's campaign (and it was a cold night too) while his wife is out getting hammered. Needless to say, I haven't seen any more donation-seekers since then.

So if they're saying the one at the station was done incorrectly, shouldn't that ultimately fall on her husband the Mayor since the Police Force is under his ultimate guidance?

Yea, I suppose so. There are several things they could be challenging. For instance, you have to do a 20 minute observation period when you get them to the station to make sure they don't put anything in their mouth to alter the test. The test also has to been done w/in 2 hours of the initial traffic stop, etc....

There are several aspects that they could go after, but it is usually bullshit fishing.
