To be fair, UMd is in College Park which is inside the Washington DC beltway. Baltimore is a whole different world

In fact, Maryland is a fascinating state in that, despite its small area, it has a varied landscape, each very unique. The Baltimore-Washington corridor is East Coast urban (more in common with Philadelphia/New York); southern Maryland is very much "the South" (more in common with Richmond, VA); the Eastern Shore is agricultural and oriented to the Atlantic Ocean (coastal); and the panhandle is Appalachian (more in common with Western PA and West Virginia).

That diversity isn’t the explanation for its Jackson Pollack meets the toilet bowl of a dorm after a night of MD 20/20 state flag, but it probably should be ….
