The mass exodus of Buckeye talent that left Columbus for different cities in the NFL was staggering. An abundance of star players decided it was time to go make money for their talents.
This exodus meant the Ohio State football team was going to be extremely young when they played their fist game on September 3, 2016. Many national pundits were saying the Buckeyes have too much inexperience to win the East division and might be looking on the outside for second consecutive season at the playoffs.
Granted it is still way too early to say this young scarlet and gray team is definitely winning the East or making the playoffs but the narrative is quickly changing after two weeks of this new season.
One of the biggest question marks going into the season was the secondary. Tyvis Powell, Vonn Bell (safties) and Eli Apple (cornerback) left, which meant new co-defensive coordinator Greg Schiano had to rebuild the secondary.
Ohio State wasn’t left without talent, hunger nor drive. They even had experience but not “starting” experience.
Malik Hooker arrived on the scene as a starter for this season. The young man has really made an impression while opening lots of eyes across the country.
Gareon Conley, the lone holdover from last season, is an extremely talented cornerback. He was voted a team captain by his teammates which tells you about his leadership.
Damon Webb is starting this season, he has experience playing the nickel cornerback position last year.
Marshon Lattimore is a young player that has been plagued by hamstring injuries in his young career. The Ohio State coaching staff has implemented some new technology this past training camp which has allowed them to keep an eye out for players like Lattimore. The new technology shows the coaching staff and medical team when players are over exerting themselves so they can help these players stay healthy.
Early returns on the new technology can be called astounding so far.
Marshon Lattimore has become the first Ohio State Buckeye since former defensive back Chimdi Chekwa (Sept. 14, 2010) to be announced the Walter Camp Defensive Player of the Week.
Lattimore had three tackles to go with two interceptions… one of which was returned 40 yards for a touchdown.
The young Buckeye secondary currently has seven interception- three of which were pick-sixes- eleven pass breakups along with eighteen passes defended.
Yes, it is still early to say the secondary is great and call it the scarlet and gray no-fly zone. Keep this up and you will be witnessing this every Saturday.
Congratulations to Marshon Lattimore on earning the Walter Camp Defensive Player of the Week.
