These TV and Film Stars Were Athletes Before Making it Big in Hollywood

Ed O’Neill

Ed O’Neill is probably one of the best things that happened to Hollywood, and he owes it all to the Pittsburgh Steelers. O’Neill was a talented young football player who was on a tryout for the Steelers. They cut him during the training camp, and O’Neill was left devastated. He turned to acting but was unable to get a role for almost 10 years.

His luck changed in the ‘80s when he landed the major role of Al Bundy in the popular TV show Married… With Children. This role got him two Golden Globe nominations. He currently stars in the award-winning Modern Family, for which he won four Screen Actors Guild Awards and has been nominated for three Primetime Emmy Awards. Thank you, Steelers!

The legend of Al Bundy and the time the Steelers actually signed Ed O'Neill

Before Ed O'Neill was Sofia Vergara's husband on 'Modern Family,' and decades before that, shoe salesman Al Bundy on 'Married with Children,' he was a football player.

Before Ed O'Neill was Sofía Vergara's husband on Modern Family, and decades before that, shoe salesman Al Bundy on Married with Children, he was a football player. O'Neill, who played at Youngstown State, was even good enough to sign a professional contract.

And in a recent Q&A, Steelers.com's Bob Labriola talked about O'Neill's very brief career in Pittsburgh.

"O’Neill was a defensive lineman during his college days at Youngstown State, and the Steelers signed him as an undrafted rookie free agent in 1969," Labriola wrote. "But alas, he was waived during training camp, maybe because he was unable to replicate Al Bundy’s glory days at Polk High School ..."

Ah, yes, Polk High, where Bundy was All-City, once scoring four touchdowns in the '66 Chicago City Championship game.

O'Neill recounted the experience earlier this year during an appearance on the "Rich Eisein Show."

"When I tried out for Pittsburgh in '69, it was [Chuck] Noll's first year, the only [position] I could play would've been outside linebacker. So that's what I tried out for."

Moving to outside linebacker probably had everything to do with a rookie class that included Joe Greene and L.C. Greenwood.

"[Training camp] actually went pretty good," O'Neill continued. "My father drove me down ... to St. Vincent's College ... and when we walked down the stairs and saw all the guys milling around, my father said to me, 'You sure you want to do this? You know, we could just get in the car and get out of here.'

"I actually enjoyed it, and my problem was that I had never played that position before. So I was trying to learn it and make the team at the same time."

O'Neill, who said he lasted two weeks before the turk came knocking, described Noll as exceedingly polite during their exit interview.

"I think he said I could go to the Eagles," O'Neill told Eisen. "He said, 'I can make a call.'"

But O'Neill said, "I'm done," in part because "I was sick of football."

‘Married… With Children’ Ended 25 Years Ago: See the Cast Now

Thirty-five years ago, on April 5, 1987, the then-fledgling Fox network expanded into primetime with the premiere of Married… With Children. And 25 years ago, on June 9, 1997, the sitcom ended after seven Emmy Award nominations, 11 seasons, 259 episodes, and a whole lot of controversy.

The show starred Ed O’Neill as the cranky shoe salesman Al Bundy, Katey Sagal as work-shy housewife Peggy Bundy, and Christina Applegate and David Faustino as their pickier kids, Kelly and Bud. Amanda Bearse and David Garrison, meanwhile, played a neighboring couple… at least until Ted McGinley replaced Garrison as Bearse’s onscreen husband.

The show was never a ratings sensation, but it certainly made a stir with its politically incorrect and oft-offensive humor. (“It was a mean-spirited and misogynist show,” Bearse told News Corp Australia in 2018. “It was just so completely inappropriate.”)

Now that Married… With Children has been off the airwaves for 25 years, however — and now that an animated reboot is in the works — scroll down to catch up with those core cast members.

‘Married… With Children’ Animated Series With Original Cast in the Works

An animated Married… With Children reboot is in the works, with the original Married… With Children cast — Ed O’Neill, Katey Sagal, Christina Applegate, and David Faustino — set to star. They’ll reprise their roles as the Bundy family in the series, which is being pitched to streaming platforms and networks.

The Married… With Children reboot is written by Family Guy executive producer Alex Carter, who will also serve as showrunner, should the series get picked up. It’s developed by Sony Pictures Television (owner and distributor of the original 1987 sitcom, still popular in syndication), and it’s been in development for over a year, according to Deadline.

The reboot closed deals with the OG cast before shopping it around, and it’s stirring up some strong interest in the industry already. Fox, Hulu, and Peacock are reportedly the most likely places for the show to land. The original series ran for 11 seasons on Fox from 1987 to 1997, helping the network rise in notoriety.

Clicked the article to see what Kelly/Christina Applegate looked like in 2022....

Found out that she was diagnosed with MS.

That's depressing.
