Report: Manny wants out

Manny Ramirez apparently isn't as happy in Boston as it would appear.

In the Aug. 1 issue of Sports Illustrated, Tom Verducci will report that Ramirez has asked to be traded for the third time in the last four seasons. He reportedly told Red Sox officials he is unhappy in Boston, particularly because he feels he has no privacy in his life off the field.

However, the Red Sox have no plans to trade Ramirez during the season, according to Verducci. Ramirez will get full no-trade protection under baseball’s 10-5 rule (10 years in the league, 5 with the same team) after this season, which means he’ll be able to turn down any trade involving him if he chooses during the offseason.

According to Verducci, Ramirez first asked to be dealt during spring training in 2002, and again after the next season. He also pleaded with Sox owner John Henry to stay in Boston when the Sox were trying to deal him to the Texas Rangers as part of the Alex Rodriguez deal before the 2004 season.

Ramirez was slow out of the gate this season, but has heated up with the weather. For the season, he’s now hitting .277 with 27 homers and 90 RBIs. His contract calls for the Sox to pay him $57 million over the next three years.

Ramirez told the Boston Globe in early April that he would play for three more seasons and call it quits at the age of 36.

"That's it," Ramirez said at the time. "I'm trying to play three more years. I just want to go out there and have fun and play the game for fun because in three years it'll be over for me and I'll go be with my family. Family comes first. Once you're done, you're done, but the game is always there. I've accomplished everything I want to accomplish."

Ramirez has been criticized of late for what some have called a lack of focus, particularly when he left the field to go into the Green Monster for what apparently was a bathroom break while Red Sox pitching coach Dave Wallace visited the mound. Ramirez barely made it out in time for the next pitch.

He also recently asked to be taken out of a game (the Red Sox were leading by a wide margin) against the Devil Rays with what was described as “tight hamstrings.” Before the next game, according to the Boston Globe, Ramirez’s teammates were playfully mocking the injury.

Ramirez is one of the more popular players in the Red Sox clubhouse

I've heard the Red Sox and Indians are discussing a blockbuster deal. The Red Sox are offering Ramirez, a groundskeeper from Pawtucket and dirt from the warning track around the Green Monster for Grady Sizemore, Travis Hafner, Arthur Rhodes, Kevin Millwood and Jacobs Field. Shapiro is considering the deal if Epstein will take CC Sabathia instead of Rhodes.

Anyplace that could afford Manny more privacy could not afford Manny's salary, even if the Red Sox chip in.

I like the guy anyway. Every team needs a silly guy (though the Sox have more than one. . .)

Anyplace that has privacy for Manny wouldn't be able to offer it once he got there.

maybe i'm a homer but I think that Houston could provide everything that he is looking for and could definatley afford him.

A little birdie told me the Red Sox are going to send him to the Yankees for Duncan and Henn, their 2 top prospects. Of course, the Red Sox are also going to pay 99% of Manny's salary for the lenght of the contract!

I truly believe Manny's only focus is "see ball, hit ball."
well let's see...

I was at a game that Manny stole second... on a swinging third strike to Burks for the second out... ball went back to pitcher... then Manny came strolling by the mound.. forgetting that wasn't the third out... and another time he walked off first after an OF FO... same brain fart...

I also remember 'manny' a time that I was afraid when a fly came his way... and would come dangerously close to his head... much closer than to his mitt... I almost sent a letter to the GM requesting Manny be forced to wear a Browns helmet when he went out in the field...

but damn can that brainless animal hit...

Manny now wants to stay, win another title

Associated Press
Posted: 1 hour ago

BOSTON (AP) - Boston Red Sox outfielder Manny Ramirez broke his silence on the trade talks surrounding him on Sunday, interrupting the manager's morning press briefing to say, "I want to be with this team and win another World Series."

In a bizarre scene - even for the ever-tumultuous Red Sox clubhouse - clubhouse clown Kevin Millar led Ramirez into manager Terry Francona's office before the game against Minnesota and said Manny had decided to talk. While Millar mock-translated from Ramirez's easily understood English into gibberish, Ramirez said he had no problem with Francona, his teammates or the fans.

"I'm just here to play and win. I'm a gangster,"
he said about four hours before the non-waiver trading deadline. "I'm still here. I'm here to win. I'm here to help this team win for 2005."

Ramirez was not in the lineup for Sunday's game against the Twins - the second consecutive game he has sat out to "clear his head." Francona said he thought the time off was working.

"You see him. He looks OK," the manager said. "He looks like he's handling things he wasn't handling a couple days ago. I wasn't sure about that yesterday; that's why he didn't play. I wasn't sure he was in a position to help us."

Ramirez leads the majors with 92 RBIs, but he's also one of the leading headaches in a Boston clubhouse that credits its chemistry for ending an 86-year title drought. Though both Francona and Ramirez denied there are any problems between them, the manager also acknowledged that he doesn't expect a 25-man roster to make it through a 162-game season without flare56ups.

"You can't have a perfect ballclub. You can't have a ballclub and not have raised voices. It's supposed to be like that," Francona said. "That's pretty much the way it's been every year. Have a couple fiascos and he drives in 140 - I hope it continues."

Francona said he didn't expect any more problems from Ramirez this season.

"They're done. You saw him," he told reporters. "I think it helped him" to have the time off.

Ramirez was booed by the Fenway Park crowd on Friday night and did not play on Saturday night. But when he came onto the field for the postgame handshake, a section of the crowd broke into a brief "Manny!" chant.

"It doesn't bother me, man," he said. "This is not my first time getting booed."

Added Francona, with a laugh: "It's not your first rodeo."

In a staged talk with sparks of spontaneity, Francona told reporters that Ramirez wanted to speak to the media with him to dispel reports that they didn't get along. The manager wasn't convinced it was necessary.

"Manny and I wanted to have an opportunity where me and him were together, so people don't think we're going to kill each other," Francona said. "He really wanted to speak to you guys with me. I think it was pretty cool."

Ramirez signed an eight-year, $160 million contract during the baseball-wide spending spree after the 2000 season. Ramirez has produced, winning a batting title, a home run title and driving in 306 runs in the past two seasons while becoming the franchise's first World Series MVP.

But the contract has become a burden for a team trying to remain in contention and under budget. Under general manager Theo Epstein, the Red Sox have repeatedly tried to trade Ramirez, famously dangling him for in an aborted deal for Alex Rodriguez after the '03 season.

For his part, Ramirez has complained that he has not been comfortable in Boston since leaving the spacious and relatively low-pressure Cleveland clubhouse. He has asked to be traded annually, but few teams are able to take on the $64 million remaining on his contract for the next three years.

The Red Sox had been in talks for a three-team deal that would send Ramirez to the Mets, but those talks stalled over New York's insistence that Boston take on a large part of the slugger's salary. This could be the last chance for Boston to unload him, because after the season he will have the right to veto any trade.

With rumors swirling as the 4 p.m. trade deadline approached, Francona met with Ramirez before Saturday night's game and gave him the weekend to clear his head; an off-day Monday gives him three days off. Francona said he would avoid using Ramirez as a pinch-hitter, but Ramirez said he's always willing to pitch in.

"It's good I'm getting the day off, but I'm here," Ramirez said. "If they need me, I'll play."

Both Francona and Ramirez seemed relaxed in front of reporters, but the scene left Francona shaking his head.

"This place," he said as the media began filing out, "it's not boring."

Back on board at Fenway eh?
Well damn, that conflicts with the rumor I heard where Manny stated the only team he would want traded to (for privacy) was the Expos.

Ramirez told the Boston Globe in early April that he would play for three more seasons and call it quits at the age of 36.
A likely quote from his future biography based on that scenario --
"Shortly after calling an early end to his career at the age of 36 Manny Ramirez began a continuing regimen of Xanax."

I've got another freeking stalker!?? Look, any of you that want to start going to another site, like match.com, or eharmony.com, I'll pay your dues.

I was hoping that Boston was stupid enough to trade Ramirez. Ah well ..
