Two dead in second Brazil soccer brawl arranged over Internet




RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil (AP) - A brawl between fans of rival soccer teams arranged over the Internet left two dead and four injured, police said Monday, the second time in two months that clashes organized online have resulted in death.

Police arrested two men and charged them with killings that occurred Sunday night following a game between Botafogo and Fortaleza, which Botafogo won 2-0.

On Oct. 17, a shootout between rival groups of Brazilian soccer fans that left one dead and two critically injured in Sao Paulo. That brawl between Palmeiras and Corinthians fans also was arranged over the Internet.

According to police, Sunday's riot occurred after members of the fan clubs had arranged to brawl in the neighboring city of Niteroi, but Botafogo fans ambushed the minibus Fortaleza fans were traveling in near Avenida Brasil, one of this city's main thoroughfares.

The Botafogo fans shot and killed president of the Fortaleza fan club, Marionilio Pinheiro, 28 and injured four others.


The vice president of Fortaleza's fan club Ricardo Fernandes Fontinelle is accused of killing Botafogo supporter Fred Paiva da Silva, 29, who died after being taken to the hospital.


Police said the two groups arranged to brawl using the online networking community Orkut.
