Man Charged with Murder 41 years later

PHILADELPHIA (Reuters) - A Pennsylvania man who shot and wounded a police officer more than 41 years ago will stand trial for his murder following the officer's death last year, a judge ruled on Wednesday.
Prosecutors say the victim, Walter Barclay, died of injuries directly linked to the 1966 shooting.
William Barnes, 71, who already served around 20 years in prison for the shooting and other offenses, was rearrested last year and charged with murder following Barclay's death.
Prosecutors say a urinary tract infection that afflicted Barclay was a direct result of his paralysis. That in turn was caused when Barnes shot him in the spine during an attempted break-in on November 27, 1966.

I think this is a terrible miscarriage of justice. He had already served 20 years in the past for the shooting. To charge him with murder after the man he shot has successfully lived FORTY ONE YEARS after the incident is ridiculous. Homicide by urinary tract infection!? Please!

The cop remained paralyzed for the entire 41 years while that asshole got to walk around jail for 20 and walk around free for 21 more. F*** him. But it seems like a waste of money and time, even if I have no pity.

Yeah, the guy was paralyzed for that time, but he was alive. He was in car accidents, fell out of his wheel chair, who knows how active and or happy he was. Being paralyzed in a wheel chair isn't as good as being able to walk but it's still way better than being fucking dead.

I don't condone the shooting, but I don't believe revenge at the end is worth this kind of misguided "justice." We have a prison system that is built on the idea that you do your time, you don't owe society anything anymore. Can't we even keep that one idea right?

WTF why waste the $$. Bing the guy in, shoot him in the spine, and throw his ass back on the street.

He already fullfilled his punsihment for his crimes.

So YOU think....

Turns out he was actually using HGH in the slammer back in the 70's and won't come clean about it.

If that's not worth dropping a few million on to prosecute and lots of time, I don't know what is.

So let me get this straight... what you're saying is that the nature of the punishment must not *only* fit the nature of the crime, but its duration must also equal the duration of the suffering that comes as its result?

Interesting idea. How about we just adopt sharia law (just an example) while we're at it so as to base our entire system of justice on Abrahamic religions and implement the "an eye for an eye" method of meting (or would it be "meating") out punishment?

Just askin'...

No, I think he's just saying he doesn't feel sorry for the guy.

I guess I don't feel like you've ever paid enuf.. IF
your victim deals with the effects of the act for the rest of their life
or in the case, the victim was killed.. then the perp
should never have a reprieve.. not even after 20 years

It's tuff to empathize since I have no experience
but if the victim were a relative or friend
I don't think I'm big enuf to forgive
especially if I watched that affected individual deal with it
every day... or the victim was dead
