After listing the great Jesse Owens, Jack Nicklaus, Woody Hayes, & Archie Griffin as top tier Buckeyes that deserve first mention of Making The List I will continue as I have from the last two weeks – and go with football.

It is football season and seems appropriate.

I will go controversial this week. I find the need to do so.

When you think Quarterback for The Ohio State University who is the first name that pops into your head? The Buckeye gridiron machine has produced a tremendous amount of names over the many decades. But Quarterback is somewhat limited. After all the Buckeyes are more known for “…the three yards & a cloud of dust” philosophy mastered by the great Woody Hayes.

Running backs, wide receivers, linemen on both sides of the ball, linebackers, defensive backs, even kickers – all have flown into the NFL and continued the prosperities surrounding their talents. But, again, Quarterbacks, Buckeye Quarterbacks, have had limited success beyond the confines of the world we love that is tinted in Scarlet & Gray.

I will pick one that I feel was the greatest quarterback in Buckeyes history – regardless of the name and numbers you find a need to toss my way after hearing my choice. I will not be persuaded. I base my choice on his dominance as a Buckeye & not venture into other factors of his life.

Art Schlichter.

Art Schlichter was born and raised in Washington Court House, Ohio, which is a small community just south of Columbus. He was a High School star with a great future. There were many colleges that pursued him but he decided to stay close to home and play for the legendary Woody Hayes.

He would be the only 4-year starter with the Buckeyes – ever. (Braxton Miller stood to tie that distinction, but, as we know, that all changed preseason). Art owns the School records for passing yards: 7,547, total yards: 8,850, and total touchdowns: 85.

His 951 attempts are the most by a Buckeye QB. Completed passes – 497 is 2nd all-time. & his 50 TD’s passed ranks 4th. He would run for 1,303 yards and produce 35 TD’s on the ground.

In his 4 years as a Buckeye starter he would be in 4 Bowl games – only winning 1 which would be the 1981 Liberty Bowl against Navy. He would also become known as the one who threw the interception caught by Clemson’s Charlie Bauman in the Gator Bowl that would get Woody fired the following day. (Certainly not by any count a pleasant memory!)

What makes Art’s numbers all the more impressive is that he played in an era where it was an 11-game season with a bowl game (if eligible – which the Buckeyes were 4 times in his 4 years). The limiting factor too was that Woody & Earle were far from passing gurus or advocates.

Art’s troubles over the years are perhaps the initial thoughts we have when we hear his name. We forget that he was a passing stud in a program that had no clue of how to do it. He helped to change the landscape for the future of QB’s at OSU. The names that followed – we know who they are – but no mention here – as they will eventually be Making The List as well.

Besides this is a discussion of Art Schlichter and why he should be the 1st QB in Making The List.

The possibility that the question “why would I chose Art Schlichter as the 2nd football player, and have him follow the great Archie Griffin?” Well… (!) The QB position is seen as the leader of the team – the General on the field. He’s often THE star; or certainly “perceived” as THE star. So based on that utterly “unconvincing” summation I will stick by my guns and simply confirm that Art Schlichter was indeed the best quarterback in the history of The Ohio State University. There cannot be any aimless reiteration of his ongoing troubles – all which are synonymous with the Schlichter name – because Making the List is not a moral flatulence but a profile of a Great Buckeye.

And Art Schlichter was in fact that!
