This season I have been following the OSU Women’s Volleyball team. They impressively delivered for Buckeye Nation a 25-10 mark while advancing to the Sweet 16 in the NCAA National Championship Tournament.
What does this all mean?
Basketball is in session and we have a slew of names to address in this sport both on the Men’s and Women’s side of the game. But my recent epiphany attack has arisen yet again.
I have decided that this week we will take an unprecedented move and announce a current student at The Ohio State University as the one that deserves to Making The List.
Elizabeth Campbell of the Women’s Volleyball Team is that choice.
In the Buckeye’s loss to the top-ranked Washington Huskies in the Sweet 16 of this year’s NCAA Championship Tournament Elizabeth would deliver her 19th double-double as a Buckeye as she would see 24 kills at a .315 attacking pace with 12 digs.
Elizabeth transferred from Duke where she averaged 2.8 kills, 2.39 digs, and .89 blocks while with the Blue Devils. This all transpired in 2103 – her Sophomore year.
Junior Year
In her Junior, once fully at OSU, she would be an All-America honorable mention and All-Northeast Region selection by the AVCA … ranked second on the team with 2.77 kills per set, elevating the rate to 3.18 kills/set during Big Ten play … posted season totals of 346 kills, 206 digs, 71 blocks (11s, 60a) and 25 service aces (412 points) … tallied seven double-doubles, including a 20-20 effort (23 kills, 20 digs) in five-set victory at Nebraska (10/4), and in final two matches of NCAA Tournament run (16 kills, 13 digs at Kentucky; 11 kills, 17 digs vs. Wisconsin) … named the ESPNW National Player of the Week (10/8) and Big Ten Player of the Week (10/6) following impressive performance at Nebraska … picked up all-tournament accolades in the Sports Imports D.C. Koehl Classic (9/5-7) … concluding her first season as a Buckeye by contributing 11 or more points in each of the final 11 contests … an OSU Scholar-Athlete.
Senior Year
Elizabeth this year on December 8th earned All-Northeast Region honors from the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA). It would be her second straight All-Region performance – earning similarly last season.
Campbell has started all 34 matches this season for the Scarlet & Gray and ranks fourth in the Big Ten averaging 3.63 kills per set. The 2014 All-America honorable mention has racked up 11 double-doubles this season and owns 19 over the past two years as a Buckeye.
Elizabeth Campbell is a valued athlete. In her two years with The Ohio State University she has delivered numbers that often take others more time.
In announcing her to Making The List – the first women athlete and first women’s volleyball player, I am seemingly dashing past many noticeable and deserving names. But my intent, simply, is acknowledging a great athlete who has delivered memorable moments that are still fresh, exciting, and commendable. The fact that she is still in school, honestly, had no notice.
There are no rules for Making The List other than the nominee is an athlete, or coach, who has represented The Ohio State University in an outstanding and admirable manner – often of which includes sacrifice.
Elizabeth Campbell has participated on all three counts. She, unquestionably, has provided enough evidence of being a great Buckeye. Therefore, I am pleased to announce the first Woman Athlete for Making The List and only by sheer coincidence is she currently still enrolled in classes at The Ohio State University. Even if this were three years removed, or twenty-five, she would be remembered as a great OSU Athlete. So why wait for time to past before acknowledging these facts?
