Video game helps Kansas' Briscoe improve on the football field

By J. BRADY McCOLLOUGH
The Kansas City Star

LAWRENCE | Dezmon Briscoe, you just completed the most prolific season for a wide receiver in Kansas history. How did you do it? What aspect of your game improved the most during your sophomore season?

"The aspect of my game ?"

Briscoe broke into a smile. He knew the answer he wanted to give wouldn't make any sense, but hey, what the heck?

"I'd have to say the updated Madden 2009," Briscoe said. "In Madden 2008, they didn't really roll their coverages as much."

So, playing a video game helped you catch 78 passes for 1,206 yards and 12 touchdowns? Being lazy and spending hours on the couch helped you become a second-team All-Big 12 performer?

"I mean, I play Madden a whole lot," Briscoe explained. "They roll their defenses now. The game systems these days are just crazy. Me playing Madden, it helps me read the defense on the field."

Cont'd ...

Anybody still playing this?

When I play I usually draft a franchise and build it up.. I rarely play games anymore. I have a lot of fun doing the GM parts, haha.

It's funny seeing guys in free agency who would never, ever be in free agency. For example.. Jay Cutler was a FA after his rookie contract was up.. no way Denver lets him go.

Almost time to start a Madden '10 discussion/wish list thread.. if there are a few people interested I'll go ahead and do it.

I played both heavily for years, but for the first time, I felt Madden was a step behind and didn't end up getting it.

I haven't done franchise mode this year, but most years my drafting gives me too much of an advantage. I like taking lowly teams, giving them a buckeye or too (troy smith & ted ginn) and going from there.

Yeah, drafting definitely gives the user an advantage sometimes. I usually make it interesting by drafting all rookies or one-year guys. That's what I did in my most recent franchise. Took a few years to get going, but once it did the team was unstoppable.

All-Buckeye drafts are pretty fun. Unfortunately QB, RB, TE and FB aren't well-represented, but the rest of the positions make the team pretty damn good.

I've stopped playing it. I don't know, but it just wasn't a fun game to me. And I agree that it's about time to start a Madden 10 thread. Information on the game is already being released.

I was playing this guy I normally clown-stomp on, and this game we decide to switch it up and play the Cards and the Niners.

I was the Niners, and even though they are ridiculously terrible, I was pretty confident I could beat him with the Cards.

In the first quarter, he's got the ball and realizes he can't run it with Edge. So he goes shotgun for the entire game. And once I see he starts throwing the ball on every down, I figure I have him beat - a one dimensional team is a sitting duck, right?

Wrong, dude. I could not stop Fitzgerald, Boldin, and then Breaston. I would drop 9, and then 10, and manually control PWillie, but he would just dink and dunk 4 yards every time with a roll out, or he would scramble with Warner.

I was shocked. He ended up winning since I literally could not run the ball. My only threat was Vernon, and he locked Vernon up pretty well.

Pretty embarassing loss, man. I just could not believe I couldn't stop the pass. Nothing I would do worked. I liked to blitz the corners because he would roll out immediately, but once he started catching on to that, he would just dink and dunk. Absolutely frustrating.

Any tips?

Some interesting stuff coming out about Madden. I just wish the expanded QB ratings would have been on NCAA :( The breakdown of Deep, Medium and short passing is genius and hopefully will kill alot of cheese.

Too bad it will still suck compared to NCAA

What I do against pass-friendly teams..

4-6 defense, or a 3-3-5
Mostly zone, but I'll man up and blitz heavily on third down if it's not working well.
SS blitz
OLB blitz/weak side blitz (I love 3-3-5 for OLB blitzes - LB Ram Dogs) I generally man up when I blitz in 3-3-5
Show blitz so he feels the pressure but doesn't know where it's coming from

If using a weak side blitz and he stacks that side, flip the play and rush around the tackle

I generally only use corner blitzes in zone defenses. It's really easy to pick up on a CB blitz in Madden (another player will ALWAYS play over - usually a safety, and the corner isn't in the normal coverage stance most of the time).

Use the multiple D playbook if you don't already. Good mix of plays in it.

SF's corners are good enough to be in position to make a pick or tip if the ball is thrown to quickly. I rarely get sacks in Madden, but I ALWAYS pressure the QB and have a lot of picks. I've had franchises that have averaged 5 picks per game on high difficulty settings because of my ridiculously aggressive strategy. I always control LBs, usually OLB, but sometimes grab one of the safeties and play more zone/less blitz if a certain WR is doing too well.

2010 Madden will be one for the ages for anyone who drafts all Buckeye teams. The only problem will be, what to do with the surplus of CB's and DBs.

I'm going to make the roster right now because my friends are all passed out.

QB - Troy Smith, Todd Boeckman
RB - Beanie, Antonio Pittman, Mo Wells
FB - Brandon Smith
TE - Ben Hartsock, Rory Nicol
WR - Santonio Holmes, Ted Ginn, Anthony Gonzalez, Michael Jenkins, Brian Robiskie, Joey Galloway, etc
LT - Orlando Pace, Alex Boone
LG - Rob Sims, Doug Datish
C - Nick Mangold, Alex Stepanovich
RG - LeCharles Bentley, Datish
RT - Shane Olivea, Kirk Barton

DE - Will Smith, Kenny Peterson
NT - Ryan Picket, Tim Anderson
DE - Jay Richardson, Simon Fraser
LOLB - Vernon Gholston, Marcus Freeman
ILB - AJ Hawk, Bobby Carpenter
ILB - James Laurinaitis, Matt Wilhelm
ROLB - Mike Vrabel, Na'il Diggs
CB - Antoine Winfield, Nate Clements, Chris Gamble, Shawn Springs, Donald Washington
FS - Malcolm Jenkins, Will Allen
SS - Donte Whitner, Donnie Nickey

Nugent
Trapasso

Some of those guys are probably on the wrong side.. Depth will be good, some starters will be a little iffy. Not even sure if a few of the guys will make it into the game, but they're able to be created. :p

Put Jenkins at FS 'cause of the ridiculous amount of CBs.

I also always run a 3-4.

I like this idea. Add Larry Grant he's on the Xbox 360 version at least, and I had to create Dustin Fox who's on the Bills.

Cards might only have a 70ish ranking but their offense is extremely potent in that game.

You can't cover Fitzgerald, and if you play the safety that means Boldin is going to be open.

A one dimensional throwing team that you can't get pressure on will absolutely destroy you.

So I had time to get a quick game in today which I won 27-10.

My opponent played as Tennessee (my 2nd choice team) and I played as Pittsburgh. I was up 13-3 in the 2nd Qtr when he tried to sneak a pass over my OLB to his TE, Polamalou (spell check) came up and made the pick and I took over.

I shook off the tackle from the TE, spun around two approaching OL, got past vince young and chris johnson fell down at the 5 behind me as I returned it for 6.

Wanted to upload and save the highlight. Greatness score was 2871.

Not sure why I went through the whole story, but it was sexy.

Anyway, I was just curious as too the highest anybody else has every gotten on a paticular play?
