Brush at Nordonia

What, when, where: Western Reserve Conference game, 7:30 p.m., Boliantz Stadium, 8006 S. Bedford Road, Macedonia. Call 330-908-6001.

Records: Brush 6-2, 4-1; Nordonia 4-4, 3-2.

What to watch: After a 1-3 start, Nordonia has regrouped and won three of its past four games and can climb above the .500 mark for the first time all year while being part of a possible four-way tie for second place. Even with victories over Brush and Hudson, the Knights will need some help from those above them to pull into playoff contention. Nordonia has dominated the most recent games in the series with Brush, winning three in a row and six of the last seven. Brush, fourth in Region 1, is in line for a playoff berth, but has not clinched it.

Hudson at Nordonia

What, when, where: Western Reserve Conference game, 7:30 p.m., Boliantz Stadium, 8006 S. Bedford Road, Macedonia. Call 330-908-6001.

Records: Hudson 7-2, 4-2; Nordonia 5-4, 4-2.

What to watch: The winner earns a share of second place in the league but should be able to make postseason plans. Nordonia has overcome a sluggish start by winning four of its last five games - including a 42-14 thrashing of Brush last week - to pull into playoff contention in Division II. Hudson's season has been one of streaks. The Explorers, seeking a fourth straight playoff appearance, began the season with three straight wins. Then came consecutive losses to Brush and Solon, followed by four straight victories. Sixth in Region 2 of the Division I poll, the Explorers probably need to win in order to reach the postseason. There is no probably for the Knights. A win is all that works.

NORDONIA - In a game filled with crucial momentum-changing plays, Nordonia came through with the outcome on the line to outlast visiting Hudson 17-13 in a Western Reserve Conference thriller.

Facing fourth-and-27 from its own 36 with slightly more than a minute left, Hudson junior quarterback Sean Fertick hit senior running back Steve Faul on a screen pass, and Faul rambled 28 yards to get a first down and keep the Explorers alive.

On second-and-10, though, Nordonia junior running back/defensive back Jordan Mabin intercepted Fertick's pass over the middle to seal the win for the Knights and send the crowd into a frenzy with 54 seconds left.

``I knew they were going to run verticals,'' Mabin said. ``I tried to stay deep, saw the pass go up, got position and went for it.''

It was Nordonia's persistence in the face of adversity that enabled the Knights to win. Trailing 10-3 at the half, the Explorers (7-3, 4-3) moved the ball to midfield before stalling on their initial possession of the third quarter.

Hudson's punt then hit a Nordonia player in the back, and the Explorers recovered at the 17. Three plays later, Fertick scrambled 10 yards for a touchdown to tie the score and shift the momentum back in Hudson's favor.

The Knights responded, though, riding the legs of Mabin and junior fullback Billy Smith. Junior quarterback Zach Boedicker capped off an 81-yard drive with a 25-yard touchdown run on an option to put Nordonia ahead 17-10.

``I saw the end, and he went right for Jordan,'' Boedicker said. ``So I cut it back inside, broke two tackles, and got some great blocking from the line and receivers.''

``We knew we could move the ball on them,'' Mabin said. ``The fumble was devastating, but we kept our heads up and got it done.''

Hudson drove to Nordonia's 15-yard line on the ensuing possession, but the Knights defense stiffened and forced the Explorers to settle for freshman kicker Ross Coberly's second field goal, a 32-yarder.

Nordonia (6-4, 5-2) scored its first touchdown on an option play as well. This time, when the defense converged on Boedicker, he pitched to Mabin, who is essentially impossible to bring down in the open field. Mabin raced down the sideline for a 20 yards to put the Knights ahead 10-3.

Mabin rushed for 108 yards on 23 carries.

<H1 class=red>Knights nip Wildcats on 42-yard TD pass

Nordonia's Jordan Mabin lived up to his billing Friday night at Mayfield Municipal Stadium.

Mabin pulled in a fourth-and-3, 42-yard touchdown pass from senior quarterback Zach Boedicker, son of Nordonia coach Keith Boedicker, with 1:32 remaining to lift the Knights to a must-win Western Reserve Con ference vic tory over the Wildcats, 17-13.

"These field conditions were just horrible," said Mabin, who just seconds before his game-winning catch slipped on the wet field on third down, losing 2 yards.

"I felt like a bit of a goat," Mabin said, "but I think I redeemed myself on the next play. We knew once we stepped foot on the field [last night] that with the field conditions as they were, we were going to have to hold onto the ball and crack the yardage out.
"The pass was just a slant pattern, and I got loose and Zach made a great throw, and when I pulled it in along the right side, I just raced back to the left side of the field, and my blockers opened the holes."
"I just had to dive for the end zone when I got around the 2," Mabin said.
Nordonia (5-1, 2-1) carried a 7-6 lead into the fourth quarter, then added a 29-yard field goal by sophomore Eric Vukmanic with 11:05 remaining to build the advantage to 10-6.
Mayfield (5-1, 2-1) battled back to take the lead, 13-10, with 6:36 left on a 4-yard run by junior Ashante Williams, capping a 12-play, 64-yard drive, and a conversion kick by senior Scott Kravitz. Nordonia's game-winning drive started with 3:02 left to play, and covered 51 yards in four plays.
"This field was a joke," coach Boedicker said. "But it was the same field for both teams. Luckily, we came up with a great push at the end and pulled it out.
"I've been telling the kids all week how important this game was to our title chances," Boedicker continued. "Unfortunately, we had bad field position for almost the entire second half. We're fortunate now that we have our next two opponents at our place."
After a scoreless first quarter, Nordonia took a 7-0 lead to the locker room at halftime, with senior Billy Smith pulling in a 9-yard touchdown toss from Boedicker with 49.7 seconds on the clock, capping a nine-play, 63-yard drive. Junior Nathan Lewis kicked the extra point.
Mayfield's first touchdown came with 3:01 left in the third quarter, with Williams scoring on a 4-yard run.
"This was a great game," said Wildcats coach Larry Pinto, "They just made one more big play than we did."
