One of the nation’s top shooters is officially a Buckeye.

Despite having not yet coached a game in Columbus, head coach Chris Holtmann may already have a “proof of concept” so to speak to point to, when answering the question of what he brings to Ohio State. The Buckeyes picked up their highest commitment since 2015 in Holtmann’s first recruiting cycle as head coach, when New Jersey shooting guard Luther Muhammad committed to Ohio State in September.

Today, he officially signed his letter of intent with the Buckeyes.

Muhammad certainly didn’t seem like a real possibility for Ohio State for much of his recruitment, and it wasn’t until Holtmann, and maybe more importantly assistant coach Mike Schrage (his primary recruiter) arrived in Columbus that the Hudson Catholic guard really even looked at Ohio State. Holtmann and Schrage made Muhammad a priority, and worked hard to be included in a top five that Muhammad released in early August.

However, it wasn’t until Muhammad visited campus on September 8th that his recruitment really began to heat up. He hosted Chris Mullin, Bob Huggins, and Chris Holtmann, among others, but ultimately, Luther had made up his mind during that visit to Ohio State. He committed via his Twitter account on September 22nd, and gave the Buckeyes a massive recruiting win over the likes of Xavier, St Johns, West Virginia, and Virginia.

The No. 5 shooting prospect from New Jersey, Muhammad is the 15th shooting guard, and 72nd overall prospect in the class of 2018, per the 247Sports Composite Rankings,

Scouting Report

“Muhammad is an ultra-competitive and potentially versatile perimeter player. He's physically strong, aggressive on both ends, and perhaps most naturally talented defensively. He's worked hard to expand his offensive game and become more of a consistent ball-handler, shooter, and playmaker in the process.” - ESPN
