But don’t expect him to be a serious candidate.

The coaching carousel is already off to a roaring start, now that LSU is officially looking for a new head coach. It’s pretty clear that LSU is targeting a big name, with Houston’s Tom Herman and Florida State’s (and former LSU coordinator) Jimbo Fisher.

But according to one report, LSU will at least attempt to shoot even higher than that. From our friends at FootballScoop:

If Orgeron doesn’t earn the job, sources tell FootballScoop that LSU’s committee believes they can and should land a home run. “Their sights are on national championship caliber, proven head coaches,” a source with knowledge told FootballScoop this morning. During the initial, exploratory phase, we are told to expect LSU, through representatives, to gauge the interest of some of the top coaches in college football, including Nick Saban, Urban Meyer, Bob Stoops, Jimbo Fisher and Tom Herman. Right or wrong, sources tell FootballScoop that LSU believes they will be able to attract a coach of that caliber.

Wait, Urban Meyer?!

On the other hand, why shouldn’t LSU at least try to reach out Meyer’s people? He’s one of the very best coaches in college football. If you’re going to fire a coach who has been as successful as Les Miles, especially before October, you have to think you have a shot at one of the very best coaches in college football. Or at least, you’d better.

But contacting Urban Meyer and believing Urban Meyer could be a legitimate candidate for this position are two different things. Given Meyer’s connections to Ohio, the level of success the Buckeyes are enjoying, and some of the uncertainty around LSU’s administration, the odds that Meyer would seriously consider the LSU job seem exceptionally low.

In fact, it’s hard to imagine Urban Meyer taking another FBS head coaching job other than Ohio State in general, except for maybe Notre Dame.

LSU reaching out to Nick Saban, Bob Stoops, Urban Meyer, etc, makes a lot of sense. Meyer’s people may very well get phone calls from other big name college football programs this season. But don’t expect any of that to lead to anything.

A thanks, but no thanks seems like the most likely scenario here.
