LSU Baseball (official thread)

Looking forward to the game vs Texas today.

We will see another good arm, lucky for us that he's RH. Nonetheless, he's a top end SEC type arm. Also lucky for us, Texas did throw their stud closer for 2 innings last night. He'd prob still be ok for an inning tonight, but they have alot of good options. I'm happy we don't have to see Hansen.

Texas' offensive numbers don't jump off the page but they're a good offensive team. Disciplined at bats, spray the field, mix of power and average.

Excellent defensive ball club. Good catcher. Speed around the outfield.

Texas is the real deal, fellas. This isn't a #1 team just on paper. They check all of the boxes. They don't really have weaknesses.

I'll be very interested to see how they approach Floyd. In my mind, hitters have chased him too much so Texas may be more patient and make him hurt himself. Or, maybe Floyd's juice is just that good. We'll know after tonight. No, I don't expect for an effective offspeed to come out of nowhere. I would guess that everybody but Money is live today out of the pen.

We have to play good defense. I expect a good bit of traffic. We just need to stay cool.

We can hit their pitching. It's good but we have really good hitters.

The running side of the game is intriguing. Both Ardoin and Milazzo are elite defenders. With some traffic on both sides, you wonder how each coach treats the running game.

Let’s Geaux!!!!

My optimism says LSU 8, Texas 6. We need to get into their pen early.

My pessimistic side (Floyd struggles, bats are cold) says Texas 12, LSU 4.

Well, that sure sucked.

Infield throwing errors cost us again last night and put us in a hole in the 2nd. Unlike the OU game, the bats weren't able to get us back on top (did hold Texas to only 6 runs like my optimistic take did tho!)

BUT, take care of Baylor tonight (like they should!) and it is a 3-1 week with the only loss being to the #1 ranked team in the country. That is NOT a bad week. Win 3 out of 4 every week and you're in good shape come May.

Let's beat the Holy Hell out of those Baylor Baptists tonight Baws!!!

9-2 is not too shabby considering that one of those losses were to Texas. The loss in Ruston stings more.

I don't think JJ is far off from getting this team fully ready. There are things he doesn't know about this team, that we know simply because we've watched this team of players for a while.

I think the Berry move to 3rd is good. Gio in right is solid and I think Gio with reps is gonna be a good thing esp since he is a lefty at the plate.

What were Gavin's stats were last year at this time? I'm sitting here wondering what has happened to him? I dont see the swagger. I realize his average was sitting around maybe 300 last year but he was crushing the ball on contact, lots of rbi's etc. He seems different this year. Maybe he needs to be where he was a staple in the line up like last year? maybe moving down altho I understand what jj is trying to get production wise from the bottom of lineup, has put him in a funk?

I think the staff on the bump has great potential pitchers. Friday guy is set. Taylor and Dutton are special guys imo. Reyzelman is special imo. I think Hilliard being a Sunday guy would help Hilliard on day 3 to have a better edge in opponents. I dont believe floyd should be a day 2 starter, notice I said starter. I think he would make a fine closer even somewhere in the middle.

I cannot understand for the world why a fb ONLY throwing pitcher will be awarded a weekend start in the SEC. It won't end well. I know he was tinkering with something offspeed yesterday but it was not in the mix as a signature strike pitch. What is crazy is that if you take away a couple of plays he was actually still in the game against Texas. Just saying. I think he would make an excellent closer, maybe even better than the one we have now.

Hilliard is effective against high velocity hitting teams as we know who have been used to seeing higher velocity. He keeps these type teams off balance. He does not seem effective against weak swac,
southland like teams.

Seems like alot of teams lsu plays are weak bs teams until conference. You get to see your team shine but does it actually do any good other than managing a base for where you are? No, imo.

Imo, Joubert and Merrifield are not really ready yet. They are new to this level. Sorry but jmo.

I understand JJ trying to be selective with his line up at the plate but countless times we take that first pitch fb/watered down duece strike right over the middle. We need to sit on that much more. LSU needs to take that pitch away from opposing pitchers. Most of the line up are big fb hitters, green light them on first pitch strikes. I realize you don't wanna run yourself out of an at bat but nothing else is really working when your team is struggling at the plate. So many times since the beginning of the season we take right down the middle. I get it , but at some point you gotta open it up maybe by 3rd inning.

I understand why some fans are hard on Crews, Morgan, Berry etc about hitting in big games because their stats against the better competition are not as good as the powder puff comp. but again, this is why it is important we face the better competition. Acclimatization is important. Just sayin. The Tigers need many more nail biters and their shit pushed around before conference kinda thing.

I'd like to see JJ jumps some umpire ass, maybe it isn't his persona but the plate guy last night was a straight arse and needed his shite pushed in. His zone was the size of a volleyball. Forget belt to knees type of thing.

Line up should be:

Crews cf
Morgan 1st
Doughty 2nd
Dugas(last year)lf
Berry 3rd
DH
Gio rf
Thompson(improving some at ss)
Millazo c

At ss, lsu has to continue to improve on defense, we lack a big stick at catcher and the fact that we changed Doughty to 2nd "changed" 2 positions from last year not one. This takes time to gel. It seemed to get somewhat better. I think Berry at 3rd will get much better, he showed he has a gun at 3rd.

Tough loss last night. But time to bounce back and Beat Baylor!

Let's FRICKin ride BAWS!!!!!

We're only 2 points down right now.

points?
seriously?

my kids were like 4 years old and running laps if they said “points” referring to baseball games.

9-2 is not too shabby considering that one of those losses were to Texas. The loss in Ruston stings more.

La Tech is a solid ball club.
and the weather was craptacular that night.

so while i’m not happy about it, it’s not nearly as bad as losing to pretty much any other in state school.

I think the Berry move to 3rd is good. Gio in right is solid and I think Gio with reps is gonna be a good thing esp since he is a lefty at the plate.

keep Berry in RF, swap Doughty and Merrifield defensively.

purchase tickets to Omaha.

What were Gavin's stats were last year at this time? I'm sitting here wondering what has happened to him?

came on late last year.
at least not first month of season.
Doughty was the Feb/March stud last year.

then Dugas just took off.

I dont believe floyd should be a day 2 starter, notice I said starter. I think he would make a fine closer even somewhere in the middle.

agreed.
Floyd has one pitch. a fastball.
a damn good one, but it’s still a heater.
jesus christ, i never made it past HS, but give me 2-3 at bats against anybody’s heat and im gonna get his timing (i couldn’t hit a breaker though).

and before you laugh and talk shit about me saying that, I graduated and was teammates with:
UL-M’s career strikeout leader
Tulane’s career save and strikeout leader (who at time he graduated was conference USA leader in both categories).

Hilliard is effective against high velocity hitting teams as we know who have been used to seeing higher velocity. He keeps these type teams off balance. He does not seem effective against weak swac,
southland like teams.

Hilliard achieves a ridiculous spin rate.
makes his fastball seem to rise even though it ain’t nearly as fast as say a Verlander type. He’s my saturday guy.

Imo, Joubert and Merrifield are not really ready yet. They are new to this level. Sorry but jmo.

um, Jobert is 3rd on team in BA, 2nd in homers, 2nd in RBI.
what the hell else do you want him to do?

he currently has a higher BA, 1 less bomb, and exact same number of RBI as Jacob Berry who is considered the #1 draft eligible college prospect this year.

At ss, lsu has to continue to improve on defense,

JT is coming off an injury that caused him to miss some time this spring.
He’ll come around.

we lack a big stick at catcher

we have one. his name is Tyler McManus.

but Alex Millazo is listed as a plus plus defensive catcher by MLB scouts.
he is elite among the elite behind the dish.

that is worth more per game than the extra fraction of a run a hitting catcher that is NCAA average of defense gets you.

and the fact that we changed Doughty to 2nd "changed" 2 positions from last year not one. This takes time to gel. It seemed to get somewhat better. I think Berry at 3rd will get much better, he showed he has a gun at 3rd.

Doughty played 2B in 2020 and started last year at 2B.

with that said, he is significantly better at 3B than he is at 2B.

Merrifield was JUCO national defensive player of the year last season at 2B.
JUCO, SEC, whatever. Defense is defense.

Swap these two guys.

It's odd you refer to M*ch*gan as being "from down the river"

I do find it funny, if not a little puzzling, that you hate Tulane so much.

mostly just in baseball.

and it really goes back to 2001 season.
Tulane beat LSU in a Super Regional to advance to Omaha.

LSU fans congratulated them. Skip Bertman addressed their team about what to expect in Omaha, etc.

Tulane fans acted like they were officially the New York Yankees.
they honestly thought because they snuck into the back door of the dance that they should automatically get to fuck the prom queen.

They poked out their chests and acted like they were not just on, but surpassed LSU in baseball.
Never mind that we have 3x’s as many national championships as they have total games won in Omaha.

plus, these assholes don’t even know how to grow grass in Louisiana and need a whole field made of carpet.
