I get Soldiers come back with profiles due to lower back pain all the time. They (the DOCs) have pretty much come up with some cookie-cutter instructions:

The above Soldier was seen today for Lower Back Pain. Though patients may vary in the severity of their pain, most patients will recover completely in 3 to 4 weeks if they are allowed adequate time to recover. Acute episodes of Lower Back Pain are most commonly the result of muscle spasms that can be aggravated by lifting incorrectly, carrying heavy objects, sitting for long periods of time, running, walking, jumping, repetitive twisting/turning and even sleeping incorrectly. Patients who are not allowed to participate in the active recovery process are at the greatest risk for prolonged complaints of Low Back Pain. Most importantly, patients should be encouraged to stretch their hamstring, gluteal and lumbar muscles with a series of stretches at least three times daily and as needed. It is recommended that patients participate in light duty and limited physical training for the next two to four Weeks. Instead of running/walking for PT, patients should do low impact aerobic exercises such as biking, stair master, elliptical trainer and swimming. Weight lifting with light weights and high repetitions as well as abdominal muscle training should be encouraged. Heavy lifting, jumping, marching, carrying more than 50lbs. and sitting/standing for more than 30 minutes at a time should be avoided.

I developed some muscle spasms in my lower back about 3 1/2 years ago. I waited far too long before being seen by medical personnel, and I was in so much pain I was ready for them to cut me and put in a steel rod or something. I was amazed when the prescribed muscle relaxant cured the problem.

Since then, I've had to be careful about straining my back too much. But I've never had a repeat bout with the acute pain.

My Dr. told me if you have to pull your ankles over behind your ears it is a length issue.

Just use your hand like the rest of us. The pain will subside in a couple of weeks.
