Look Who's Transferring Now (The Portal)

In baseball, a player can make $20M for failing 3 out of 4 times. So why don't you believe a coach, who presents himself (sells himself?) pretty darn well worth $10M? Heck, with the portal, can get players that are blooded, instead of selling HS kids on a program that's been in the dumpster for awhile. Or, you can pay a coach $8M even though he's never coached a game in college (Ryan Day). Guess he did stand in for Urban for three...

Presume we are still talking about Tucker but if not I apologize.

The reason why is Mel Tucker after 2 years was 7-12 and the 2021 MSU team had one hell of a weak schedule. Sure they beat ttun but got smoked by tOSU. Presenting one self well surely isn't the same as performing well.

To me, Sparty made an error by giving a guy top coach money even though he has no track record of winning games. He was still under contract so not sure what the point of throwing that much money at him after 1 good year.

Last year's Lindy's had a great article on 'dead money' of payoffs to fired coaches. Tucker was front and center. Guess teams reach for coaches that have a coaching pedigree, even though not as a HC. Even with a pedigree, as you point out Capt Buckeye, it might not pan out. Forget the guy's name, but was HC at Notre Dame, took a buy out, moved on to Kansas, and after loading up on transfers, bombed out there, and took yet another big payout. When I look back, tOSU hiring Jim Tressel was a heckuva risk. Sure, he won on the lower level, but you can hit .700 in the minors, but still, when you hit the bigs, the outcome is less than certain. However, we all know how that turned out. When Hairball said, obliquely, that Day work up on third base, he wasn't totally wrong. No HC experience, but a good pedigree from college to pros, back to college, and he's turned out pretty well, methinks. And he has on field experience as a Blue Hen (can't discount that!). Yeah, my thoughts wandered on the baseball analogy, sorry for that, just pointing out that there are other universities that roll the dice. Go Bucks!
