Longest "to go" yardage ever?

  • Watching a replay of this weekend's Georgia at Tennessee game. Georgia had 1st and 10 at Tennessee 23. Four straight penalties on Georgia, including an offensive facemask personal foul, pushed Georgia back to their 31 for a 2nd & 56, then a draw play for a 1-yard loss resulted in 3rd & 57, then another draw play for no gain lead to 4th & 57. Up until then, the longest "to go" for I had ever seen for any down was 3rd and 44. Anyone ever seen a longer "to go" yardage?

What play do you call on fourth and a bajillion?

Is there a trick play with any success?

What about the ole, fumlble-rooski-kneel on the the ball fake-quarterback screen-dive-reverse-sweep play?

Ill bet that may work...or lose more yards?

I saw a 4th and 43 on Saturday in the Red River Shootout. Texas was getting hammered, then they had Penalty, fumble, TFL.

    START: 05:10
    QTR: 4th
    POSS.: 01:08
    YARD: OSU 23
    PLAYS: 3
    YARDS: -1
    RESULT: Punt

I will consider the 4th down resulting from this series (our last series with the ball on Saturday) a realistic 4th and 78. Because we needed a touchdown to have a glimmer of hope. Which we did not get. Poop.

    Not quite.

Texas had a 4th and 49 on Saturday WITHOUT a penalty on the series. It was the most inept 3 plays I've ever seen.

    Shhhhh.

Coach Bollman might take that as a challenge.

Iowa had 4th and 40+, IIRC, last weekend against Penn State. Maybe it was the other way-around though.

I've never seen 50+ yards to go in a nonvideo game.

We used to run the first down chains for CWRU, and I don't remember what the yardage was, but I remember thinking, "Wow - they didn't even get a first down on the punt." But that doesn't say much - they may have had a really bad punter.
