Yes, we're talking Chuck Norris type speed.
Except for when they're too slow (overthrows)....

Just to be clear, I really think Todd's doing a great job this year and am quiet happy with his play. If we're going to bicker over his throwing of the deep ball as the main issue with Todd, then Ohio State's in great shape at QB. In my opinion, Smith had a better deep ball than does Todd right now. As Todd developes, that may well change... and frankly, I hope it does.... because that means Boeckman and the Buckeyes are kicking ass.

hey, don't believe Jim Tressel who says himself that Todd throws the best deep ball he's seen... think whatever you want. Troy did a lot of things VERY well. but perhaps he didn't throw it deep as much was because it wasn't one of his better attributes.

think about it.

I think that Troy just looked better throwing the ball deep. What I mean is Todd looks a little mechanical. Some of his throws look like he's trying too hard. Whereas Troy always looked so smooth...like he just reared back and let the sucker fly! Obviously I trust JT when he says Todd throws the deep ball well. But I think he just hasn't hit his comfort level yet. Time will tell. Hopefully he'll adjust in the next couple weeks.

I'm not disagreeing with you, I said earlier Boeckman had the best arm for deep balls that Tressel has had but it's the trajactory of the ball that gets him in trouble more than it did Smith.

i disagree. it's standing there and looking at Robo for five seconds before he throws the ball that got Todd in trouble this week. the safety read Todd's eyes and came over to make the play. Troy was better at looking the safety off, which as a three year (well, 2+) starter, he should be expected to be...

Not entirely true. A lot of "hitting the WR in stride" has to do with the WR adjusting his timing/route/speed slightly so as to make that happen. Good WRs make a quarterback look better in this way.

True. The best deep balls are thrown to a spot...that spot is in the most advantageous leverage position for the WR. Sometimes a WR will have to "go get it" vertically...twofold meaning there: either a jumpball as in what JT asked of Boeckman or vertical as in stretching the field. Either way, the QB's job is to put the ball where his WR can use his strengths to make the play.

The discussion of Troy Smith vs. Boeckman is interesting...sometimes the "rocket" arm type QBs do suffer on the deep ball. They'd rather throw the skinny post as opposed to the deep post...the skinny post is a laser while the deep post is more touch. What did Troy love to throw? Curls, hooks, slants, outs...power throws for a power arm. Boeckman usually excels at the touch throws...he has a sufficient arm for the other throws but he doesn't have that WOW factor like Smith. However, he does throw to that spot in the deep thirds better than Troy...at least so far.

Good stuff guys.

That this discussion has turned to a comparison of Boeckman after six games with last year's Heisman Trophy winner I think makes my original point that Boeckman stands to be a very fine QB.

For the record, in Smith's first six starts as a Junior (I started counting after the Texas game) he threw 7 TDs with his longest at 41 and 46 yards. Boeckman has thrown 14 including 42, 48, 52 and 68. And as mentioned, Boeckman does not have Ginn as a target. (Although to be fair, Smith might have been willing to trade Ginn for this year's OL.)

Boeckman clearly has flaws and imperfections. But comparing him not to Sunday QBs or Heisman winners, but to other College QBs, he represents quite nicely. With this line and the role he has been given (which is not to make decision's like Krenzel or to run like Troy) he will do quite nicely indeed.

And also consider JTs penchant for developing the O as the season progresses. I think Boeckman runs play action better than anyone I have seen under Tressel. That, his ability to go long, and the power and speed of our three RBs make for some interesting possibilities.

Ted Ginn was just the 2nd reciever on that team... Santonio Holmes can get deep against anyone too.

SH was a Big 10 wide-out. He got deep against Big 10 DBs. He'd never have gotten deep against SEC linebackers, let alone DBs.

And just because he is getting deep with regularity against NFL DBs is a flawed argument. Those NFL DBs have NFL speed, not SEC speed. And don't even try to tell me that some of them used to play in the SEC. They aren't in the SEC anymore, are they? Case closed. Q.E.D. y'all
