Living abroad for a few months.

I am going to be spending a few months in the Dominican Republic coming up here in a little while. I was wondering if anybody here has had to travel abroad, or even to the D.R., for extended periods of time.

My main question is what is the best route for a cell phone. Ideally I would love to have the ability to talk and text my family and friends. I know there are apps that allow you to do this for free, if you have internet, but I likely will not have much, if any, access to WiFi. Anybody know of any plans that don't require a contract, and would allow me to talk to and text the USA without extensive costs. I don't really needed Data, i'll be able to check my email once a day, and that's enough for me. My main concern is staying connected to my family.

Also, if anybody has been to the D.R. before, I have not. Any tips on what to bring?

I traveled throughout North American on business; therefore, I've not had to worry about cells and such. Is your excursion personal or professional?

I do know that people have taken Vonage hook-ups with them globally, because of the convenience. But that's internet based.

Yeah, I feel like when I have the internet available, then I can just use the free modes of communication that are out there for that. I am working down there, but it's my own business as an independent contractor, so it's not like I have a company that can pay for the phone.

I will be staying mostly in Santo Domingo, but I will be traveling to other cities.

Im no help with Santo Domingo. I have a buddy, whose parents live down up by Puerto Plata. He and some friends are actually headed down there tomorrow for 2 weeks. I have also been to Punta Cana. If you need rec's in either of those cities, I can help out.
