Congratulations Hawaii!!!

Hawaii captured its first Little League World Series title.

Hawaiian Punch
One swing of the bat made Hawaii's dreams come true. Hawaii capped a furious comeback against Curacao with a game-ending home run in the seventh inning to win the Little League World Series 7-6 on Sunday.

There's also a Babe Ruth League World Series... held near Buffalo this year... ended yesterday.

Our 13 yr olds lost the championship in the last inning... but they had a helluva ride... game was tied after 6.. Louisiana team went up in top of 7.. then they had a four hour rain delay before they could finish the 7th... still not bad being runner up...
========= late edit=========
the National Champions are Jefferson Parish, LA ... a town that is directly in line with Katrina's eye... that's 20 homes that aren't buttoned down... cuz those families were in Buffalo a day ago... and may not have houses to go back to... sad..

That was a rare good final game. They said the only only extra inning game in the final was in 1971, when Taiwan scored 9 times in the 9th to win 12-3.

A walkoff homer in the bottom of the 7th was a much better way to end it.

And I give the Hawaii manager credit for not even saying anything to the ump when it looked like the catcher tagged the Curacao kid on the foot early in the game. That call, which was almost impossible for the ump to see, allowed Curacao to score 2 runs to go up 3-1.

The one time I was glad when the LLWS was over was when i was living in NYC and the Danny Almonte saga was going on. Back page cover of the Daily News every day for about two weeks. It got old in a hurry...

I dislike Little League baseball and the Little League World Series. When my boy was 11 and also when he was 12, he played baseball in a USSSA/CABA sanctioned travel league where the pitching distance was 50 feet, base paths 70 feet, and lead offs were allowed which actually had pitchers pitching out of the stretch and as a result, balks could happen. This year as a 13 year old, pitching distance was 54 feet and base paths 80 feet.

Little League rules, where 11 and 12 year olds pitch from 46 feet, base paths are 60 feet, and no lead offs are allowed, is, IMO, a poor substitute for what baseball is really like. Furthermore, pitching from 46 feet seriously glamorizes the pitcher (most of the boys on my team when they were 12 could throw 60+ mph from 46 feet easily). Couple that with the coaches, who have pre-pubescent boys throwing curve balls, and, well, I really question if this is in the best interest of the boys or how much of it is frustrated former baseball playing fathers living vicariously through their sons.

Oh, and if Little League baseball were so damned concerned about the pitchers and the pitch limit used this year, they would ban curve balls from being thrown. I am sure many of us know of a kid around 11 or so who threw curve balls only to damage his arm as a result.
