I love our depth and talent at linebacker this year.
it especially helps some of the new defensive starters.
great article, it's nice to see something about ohio state that's not Moc related and has to do with FOOTBALL

Good read... I wonder how many of these guys will play in a game.

Can you rotate linebackers effectively or is it more of a position where you want to get in a rhythm and learn QB tendencies, etc.? It seems at least MLB this would be true, but we did rotate MLBs the last few seasons (I think more due to injuries than anything else).

Anyone on here ever play LB?

I was an Outside LB. Most LB's do not like to leave the game as you would imagine. They might miss the chance to knock the snot out of someone.

It would make sense to rotate especially if they are required to drop into pass coverage frequently. Some will be better at playing the run, others the pass.

On most teams the middle LB makes the calls so you could be losing leadership and the ability to read the offensive with too much rotation.

That's what I was thinking, but I never played so I didn't know how hard it would be to sub in and out.

Good point about covering the pass. We may sub a run stopper for a pass defender or just keep fresh legs in the game. Anyway, I've not seen LB depth like this in some time... if everyone can stay healthy we shouldn't have a problem keeping fresh legs in the game.

I agree with Soldier. A big reason why you generally don't see platooning in the linebackers is because most schools don't have the talent to pull it off. There's really no technical reason why it shouldn't happen, if you have the personnel.

One problem with rotating LBs to get "run stoppers" or "cover guys" in there is the audibles that the offense will start making. Subs will be based on personel sent in by the offense. If they sub in FB and TE then we go to our "run package" and they audible to a TE pass down the seam or something along those lines. I like the fact that we can rotate our LB and not lose much one way or another, but I doon't want to see us go to different LB for pass and run downs. That is what we have the Nickle for.
