Lee Corso (official thread)

Lee Corso’s Final Headgear Pick Will Be “Different Than Anything We’ve Ever Done” As College GameDay Pays Tribute to Retiring Analyst

Rece Davis doesn‘t know who Lee Corso will pick on Saturday, but he does know Corso’s final headgear pick will be unique.

In the words of College GameDay’s host, Corso’s headgear pick before Saturday’s Ohio State vs. Texas game at Ohio Stadium – his 431st and final headgear pick before he retires after Saturday’s show – will be “different than anything we’ve ever done.”

While Davis didn’t say exactly how it would be different, Corso’s final headgear pick will take place inside the Shoe, and Davis thanked Ryan Day and Ohio State for accommodating College GameDay to allow them to make the moment special for their 90-year-old longtime analyst, who’s been a staple of GameDay since its inception in 1987.

“Our gratitude to Ohio State and the administration and the athletic department, Ryan and the whole football program, for the way they have adapted a really important day for them to let us and let LC be part of that is really cool,” Davis told a group of reporters on Friday. “And the headgear pick, it'll be number 431 and it'll be one of one. It'll be different from any other one you've ever seen. I don't know who he's picking, but I know the actual structure of it will be different than anything we've ever done.”

Before Corso's GameDay pick, Ohio State coach Ryan Day honored Corso with a specialty helmet with a sticker leaf for every time he's picked the Buckeyes in the past, plus an extra one in anticipation of him picking the Buckeyes on Saturday.

Lee Corso's headgear tradition started in October 5, 1996 when he first put on the Ohio State* mascot headgear for Espn's College Gameday. Ohio State came into that game ranked third in the country, while the Nittany Lions were No. 4. And not only was Corso's Buckeyes selection correct, but Ohio State put forth a dominant 38-7 win. Over his career, Corso has made 430 selections with a 286-144 record, a 66.5% success rate, which includes one perfect 11-0 season in 1999. His most picked mascot was Brutus Buckeye, and his final appearance saw him pick Ohio State once again for the show's retirement of the tradition.
*How did Corso convince Ohio State to use the mascot head? That was recently explained by another "College GameDay" staple, Kirk Herbstreit, whose girlfriend in 1996 (and future wife), Alison, was a cheerleader for the Buckeyes.

"Lee Corso called me early in the week and said, 'Sweetheart, can you ask Alison to find out if I can have the Brutus head for my pick?'" Herbstreit said.

Herbstreit proceeded to ask Alison to ask the team's cheerleading coach, who initially said no to the idea. However, Corso asked Herbstreit to check one more time, and after consulting with Ohio State's athletic director, they got approval to use the Brutus head.

Looking back on his first headgear pick, Corso said he thought it would be funny to use the mascot's head for his selection. The Ohio State crowd went crazy for Corso's mascot head, and it quickly turned into a tradition.

Which team has Lee Corso picked the most?

Of the 430 all-time picks Corso has made, he has selected a total of 69 different college football programs to claim victory. However, one of those teams stands above the rest in terms of Corso's favor: he picked Ohio State to win more than any other squad.

Naturally, Corso's most-picked headgear teams are some of the most decorated programs in the country over the last few decades. Here's how his headgear selections look by top teams:
  • Ohio State: 45
  • Alabama: 38
  • LSU: 25
  • Florida: 22
  • Oregon: 21
Just sayin': You will note that Corso started his "headgear" pick by picking Ohio State and ended them by picking Ohio State.

Ohio State did it right. Seeing the TBDBITL spell out his name on the field was awesome.

ESPN did it right.

Fox - borrowing the feed from ESPN - did it right.

The mid-90s beginning of the TV era of college football looks a LOT different without Corso.
Things Lee Corso is not:

Desmond Howard
Mark May
Pat Macafee
Dave Portnoy
Stephen A. Smith

As these guys like Corso leave sports will become unwatchable with the volume on…and the pregame shows will be unwatchable at all
