LB Raekwon McMillan (New England Patriots)

WATCH: Sam Darnold makes head-scratching throw on red-zone pick

What in the world was Sam Darnold thinking when he up his mind and decided to throw the ball?

Sunday at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami against the winless Dolphins, the first half saw the one-loss New York Jets go down by two touchdowns, but Darnold and the offense had a chance to cut the deficit down.

But on 2nd-and-goal from the doorstep of the goal line, the second-year quarterback's next move killed the Jets' drive.

On a trips-left formation with running back Le'Veon Bell next to him, Darnold rolled left and let the three receivers go through their route trees while the offensive line moved in the same direction during the play.

The Dolphins were all over the signal caller's three targets, though, and linebacker Raekwon McMillan came screaming through the line of scrimmage and got to Darnold.

After an initial move to elude McMillan, Darnold got tangled up. But rather than taking the sack or throwing the ball away, Darnold intended pass into a clutter of two receivers and two defenders.

The off-balanced throw, which seemingly came from Darnold's hip and looked like a shuffle pass from about the 12- or 13-yard line, predictably did not go for a touchdown.

Instead, cornerback Jomal Wiltz came down with the interception at the one-yard line and the Dolphins took over, still in front of their 21-7 lead into halftime.

Compensation update: Raiders are trading a 2021 fourth-round pick to Miami for Dolphins’ linebacker Raekwon McMillan and a 2021 fifth-round pick, per source. Good value for Raiders, but McMillan is in the last year of his deal.

The Raiders sure didn't give up much to get him.

The Raiders will now have three Buckeyes on their roster, with McMillan joining Damon Arnette and Johnathan Hankins.

Isn't Rod Smith on their roster?
