Sure they do. They work on tackling too. Turnover better than a punt? Of course. But missing a tackle for a first down is much worse. It's urban meyer land. Get the offense the ball however. Force a few fumbles? Great. Linebackers need to get the guy on the ground first. If the ball comes out in the process it's a bonus. Picks to lbs are a team effort as Josh mentioned. Recoveries are back to bonus since someone (be it the tackler or someone else) needs to strip it.

Raekwon McMillan doesn't want you to pay attention to Luke Fickell — at least in a lighthearted and good-natured way.

"Coach Fick, he’s just a talker," Ohio State's middle linebacker said Wednesday. "He likes to talk all the time you can’t listen to everything he says."

Fickell is Ohio State's defensive coordinator and linebackers coach, a Buckeye legend that still holds a school record for consecutive starts as a player with 50. He is also one of the best in the nation at his craft, recruiting top talent to Columbus and shelling it out to the next level often.

James Laurinaitis, Brian Rolle, Ryan Shazier, Darron Lee, Joshua Perry — linebackers that were NFL Draft selections or will be this April. All coached by Fickell at Ohio State. McMillan is next in line, likely to leave early following the 2016 season as a junior. He is also one of three captains already firmly in place as leaders of Urban Meyer's team, an honor Fickell said last month he was basically born into.

"The day he walked in, Raekwon was that kind of person,” Fickell said. “Selfless commitment to one another and he makes others around him better at everything he does."

Leadership Role the Next Step for Raekwon McMillan

McMillan amassed those stats as a true sophomore after spending one season as an understudy to senior Curtis Grant. He played in all 15 games his freshman season and was a steady performer, but last season he established himself as a standout on the field in just his second go-round as a Buckeye.

It was a great season for him. The obvious question now is "What's next?'

Chances are the answer to that question is that McMillan will step up his game off the field, and if Urban Meyer has any say about it, that will come in the form of a larger leadership role.

Meyer places an extremely high value the role of leadership and it's impact on the success or failure of a football team. Meyer's first year at Ohio State produced an undefeated season, and Meyer said throughout that campaign and after it that one of the greatest contributors to the success of that team was the leadership of linebacker Zach Boren and defensive end John Simon.

The 2015 Buckeyes had strong leadership as well. Josh Perry, Eli Apple, Tyvis Powell, Vonn Bell, Darron Lee, Joel Hale, Adolphus Wahsington, Joey Bosa and others all proved leadership on the defensive side of the ball. What those players all having in common now is that they are no longer on the OSU roster.

That has the potential to create a leadership void on the defensive side of the ball, so now it's someone else's turn to step up, and McMillan is a prime candidate. His teammates think it's a role he's already shown signs that he is ready for.

"To say Raekwon wasn’t a leader last year is not true," said fellow linebacker Joe Berger.

Agreed. Didn't quite have the "flash" of some of the greats last season, but he was insanely productive last year and made some big plays for us. He certaily has the potential for a big year.

Billy Price said Urban Meyer constantly discusses the opportunity his team has to grow together through the experiences it shares on a daily basis. The majority of the time, that involves football-related activities.

Recently, Price had a chance to bolster his relationship with Raekwon McMillan off the field — in Jamaica.

"I mean, he's from Georgia. I'm from Northeast Ohio, just complete different areas and demographics so I really got to understand him a lot better and the things he's involved in on campus aren't necessarily what I'm involved in, but I got to learn a lot about what he's interested in," Price said Thursday at the Fawcett Center. "The relationship between he and I got a lot better."

McMillan and Price returned from their trip Tuesday night, an expedition as part of the the Soles4Souls initiative that provides shoes to underprivileged communities, specifically children. All 11 student-athletes on the trip learned to appreciate what Americans have and to also not waste time with the opportunity at a free education.

Ohio State puts its athletes in position to do great things, like win national championships. Price and McMillan did that in 2014 and won 12 more games last season. But the majority of that team is gone, either on to the NFL or graduated. What's left is an extremely young and inexperienced group, leaving Price, McMillan, Pat Elflein and J.T. Barrett as the elder statesmen.

Price and McMillan play opposite sides of the ball, so even though they are friends and teammates, they didn't really grow close until their service work in Jamaica.

"I mean, we were close friends and teammates, but I think this trip to Jamaica for Soles4Soles really brought me and Billy even closer together," McMillan said Thursday. "Just me and him being out there sweating, being out there every day in 95-degree weather. Having to get through it together, that really impacted our relationship and as teammates as well."
