LB Matt Wilhelm (All-American, National Champion, Super Bowl Champion, OSU HOF)

Despite getting cut, Elyria Catholic grad Matt Wilhelm never thought his NFL career was over
Filed by Scott Petrak December 24th, 2009 i

Matt Wilhelm was supposed to be in San Diego in September.

Instead, he spent the month working one-on-one with a trainer at Elyria Catholic High School, his alma mater.

Wilhelm landed on his feet with the San Francisco 49ers, but not before his life in the Southern California paradise was interrupted when the Chargers cut him in July. He played six seasons in San Diego after being drafted in the fourth round out of Ohio State and had been told he?d spend training camp competing with Kevin Burnett for a starting spot at inside linebacker.

But a week before camp opened, Wilhelm was summoned by coach Norv Turner. He was being cut for the first time in his adult life.

?It was extremely tough,? Wilhelm said last week by phone from San Fancisco. ?Tough on me, tough on my family. I have a 21-month-old son.

?It?s life-altering for a family. There?s nothing easy about it.?

The NFL is filled with stories like his, and Wilhelm had seen guys dropped without warning plenty of times. He just didn?t think it would happen to him.

?It was a definite reality check,? he said. ?It was a humbling experience.

?It made me more hungry. It made me better as a person, better as a husband. A lot of communication goes on between a family when things are not going right.?

Wilhelm, 28, began his Chargers career as a special teamer/backup linebacker, and had evolved into a starter in 2007. He signed a five-year, $15 million contract, then lost his starting job and playing time in 2008.

According to Wilhelm, Turner and defensive coordinator Ron Rivera said he?d get a shot to beat out Burnett for the starting spot in 2009. But after splitting repetitions in offseason workouts, Wilhelm lost his job before the competition really began.

?It was the ultimate shocker,? he said. ?I was in a state of shock for a week.?

49ers re-sign Wilhelm

One of the 49ers' scheduled unrestricted free agents will not be hitting the open market tonight. The club has re-signed veteran linebacker Matt Wilhelm to a one-year contract.

Wilhelm, 29, took over the role on the team that Jeff Ulbrich previously held as a backup inside linebacker and core special teams player. Wilhelm signed with the 49ers on Oct. 19, the same day Ulbrich was placed on injured reserve.
Wilhelm saw action in 11 games, including one start at the "Ted" linebacker position when Takeo Spikes was injured. Wilhelm, who was familiar with 49ers defensive coordinator Greg Manuksy from their time together with the Chargers, got the starting nod over rookie Scott McKillop because of his knowledge of the defense and past experience. Wilhelm started 21 games for the Chargers in 2007 and '08.

Wilhelm collected 11 tackles on defense. He added 12 tackles on special teams.

Inside linebacker: Providing Patrick Willis and Takeo Spikes stay healthy, the No. 3 linebacker won't see much action on defense this year. But the No. 3 guy also will be the front runner to replace Spikes, who is entering the final year of his contract. The three candidates are Matt Wilhelm, Scott McKillop and third-round draft pick Navorro Bowman. Defensive coordinator Greg Manusky obviously trusts Wilhelm with the job, and both McKillop and Bowman will have to win over the coaching staff to dislodge Wilhelm from the roster. McKillop was a special teams ace as a rookie, but he wasn't physical enough for Manusky, Mike Singletary and the defensive coaches last season. Bowman's motor and frame, meanwhile, are similar to Willis'. The key question is: Can he hit like Willis? We might not find out until training camp.

Top 25 Buckeyes of the Decade: #25 Matt Wilhelm

Matt Wilhelm checks in at number 25 on our countdown of the top players of the decade.

He was an All-American and All-Big Ten performer in 2002 and was one of the leaders on the dominating defense that helped lead the Buckeyes to a National Championship.

Wilhelm led the team in tackles in 2002 with 121, but perhaps more impressively, he had 19.5 tackles for loss that year, good for the 6th best season in Ohio State history.

Linebacker Matt Wilhelm will be among the 25 players attending the fourth annual NFL Broadcast Boot Camp from June 21-24. As part of the hands-on session, each player will tape segments as a studio and game analyst. Each player will also get a stint as a live radio host on SIRIUS NFL Radio.

Wilhelm, a communications major at Ohio State, said he has always enjoyed his rapport with the media. He also noted that NFL careers don't last forever.

"I'm obviously able to put my thoughts into words, and you'd love to have an avenue to stay around this great game," he said. "This is an opportunity to get a foot in the door."

Scott McKillop underwent surgery at Sanford to repair his patellar tendon and anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee. Last night veteran Matt Wilhelm was told by coach Mike Singletary that he'd be more of a swing linebacker between the ted (backside) and mike (frontside) linebacker spots.

Bowman is certainly next in line at the "Ted" strongside linebacker position inside the 3-4 defense. He ran with the third-team defense this week before McKillop tore the anterior cruciate ligament and patellar tendon in his left knee Wednesday. Both injuries typically take a six- to nine-month recovery.

That doesn't make Bowman's promotion automatic. Wilhelm might have been the second-team "Mike" weakside linebacker in camp, but he's learned both inside positions. He even started once in 2009 for an injured Spikes.

Wilhelm has looked better than Bowman so far, just by virtue of experience and knowing the defensive scheme. But he lacks Bowman's physical presence at a position that requires physical play closer to the line of scrimmage.

In practice Friday morning, Bowman broke on a swing pass and just missed holding onto an interception and easy touchdown. Not long after, Wilhelm broke on a pass over the middle and held on for the pick.

Bowman, Wilhelm jump out (and jump route) at practice
With Scott McKillop likely out for the season, the team's other backup linebackers were in the spotlight during the morning practice. And I have to say, they rose to the occasion. Veteran Matt Wilhelm jumped a hot route from David Carr in one of the late team sessions and came away with an easy interception. Meanwhile, rookie NaVorro Bowman nearly had his own interception when he darted into the offensive backfield and cut off a swing pass from Carr to Frank Gore. Bowman, however, didn't have a lot of time to react and dropped the would-be pick six.

Wilhelm mostly has been playing behind Patrick Willis at the "Mike" linebacker spot while Bowman, with McKillop out, is now behind Takeo Spikes at "Ted." After practice Greg Manusky acknowledged that drafting inside linebackers is a bit of a leap of faith these days because they rarely play downhill and take on blockers in college. But so far, he said, he and the coaches have been pleased with Bowman's grit. "From a physical standpoint, he's been pretty physical up front," Manusky said. "He can strike. He can bend." ... McKillop had what was described as successful surgery today on his torn knee tendon and ligament.

The awkwardness is even more pronounced for Wilhelm, who counted McKillop as one of his best friends on the team. He says he's praying for his buddy, but is also ready to take advantage of the opportunity.

?Coach Singletary talked about it all offseason ? it's gonna be the most competitive camp that he's had here since he's been not only the head coach, but a linebacker coach,? Wilhelm said. ?And I realize that me personally, I was in one of those situations, and I'm trying to do as much as I can each and every day to show these coaches that I want to be a part of this 49er football team, and that I can contribute on Sundays.?

Thats crazy. He's played great this preseason. I hope the Phins pick him up.

Lots of talent in the 49er's LB group. He was behind Patrick Willis, too.

I was a little surprised to see him get cut. Didn't think he played great, but figured he'd make the team. Navorro Bowman from PSU has looked better imo.

Mike Singletary didn't agree. Not sure which game it was, but he was mic'd up and ripping Matt on the sideline for not making a play.

I'll give Mike credit for one thing...he flat out said to Matt - "you're not gonna make my team missing tackles like that!!! Make the play, son...make the play!!!!!!"

Linebacker Matt Wilhelm suffered a knee injury against San Diego Thursday and was waived injured on Friday. Wilhelm and the team now must either work out an injury settlement or Wilhelm will go on injured reserve. That means Wilhelm potentially would not be available if the 49ers needed him later this season. Wilhelm was signed on Oct. 19 last year and filled in for injured Takeo Spikes.

New Green Bay Packers linebackers play increasingly large role
By Rob Demovsky ? [email protected] ? December 1, 2010

Of all the Green Bay Packers? positions that have been hit by injuries this season, none has been decimated like the linebackers.

They don?t have a backup linebacker that was on their roster at the start of the regular season. The names Diyral Briggs, Robert Francios, Erik Walden and Matt Wilhelm were foreign around these parts a few months ago. Now each of them is one play away from possibly being in a starting spot.

But on the depth chart, the Packers moved Wilhelm to Chillar?s old spot as the ?Mike? inside linebacker behind Bishop. Wilhelm was signed off the street on Oct. 26 after another backup linebacker, Brady Poppinga, was lost for the season because of a knee injury. Wilhelm had been backing up ?Buck? inside linebacker A.J. Hawk until this week.

?Obviously the workload is going to pick up with Brandon going down,? said Wilhelm, who has played only on special teams since joining the Packers. ?Now I am one play away.?
