ILB Tim Dobbins has played well in place of injured Matt Wilhelm (calf) and could push Wilhelm for the starting gig. "It's been good for Tim to play, and I think he's impressed us as a guy who can play," coach Norv Turner said of the second-year player. "I see Matt as being the starter there. We'll just see where he is when he comes back."
SignOnSanDiego.com > San Diego Chargers -- Though stars rest, Chargers still shineInside linebacker Matt Wilhelm played for the first time this preseason, going three series with the rest of the starters. The calf strain that sidelined him the previous three games has healed sufficiently for him to make his first NFL start in the Sept. 9 opener against the Chicago Bears.

The treadmill ticked off kilometers, not miles. Sometimes the heaviest piece of equipment in a hotel gym was a 10-kilogram dumbbell.
But whatever he could find, Matt Wilhelm would sneak away from bed or the pool every day to get in a workout, even as he and his new bride toured France in early July.
Wilhelm knew what awaited him when he got back to the United States. It was going to be for real now. After four years of watching and waiting, he was taking over for an icon.
?I've thought about that just by myself,? Wilhelm said. ?I've never mentioned it to my wife, not to anyone. The guy was born and raised here, and us having the success over that five-year span, him having 150 tackles every year ... But I think it's going to take a short amount of time. Because I think the fans believe in this team, and I'm a big part of this team now.?
Wilhelm spoke, of course, about his succession of Donnie Edwards, the San Diego native who led the Chargers in tackles each of the past five seasons before leaving as a free agent for Kansas City.
EC grad Wilhelm gets first start with Chargers
Staff and Wire reports
Elyria Catholic and Ohio State grad Matt Wilhelm made his first career start at inside linebacker for the Chargers on Sunday, and recovered a fumble that set up a touchdown in San Diego?s 14-3 win over Chicago.
The 6-foot-4, 245-pounder also had four solo tackles and an assist.

Inside linebacker Matt Wilhelm also left the game in the first quarter. He played the first two series after aggravating in pregame warm-ups the calf strain that caused him to miss the first three preseason games. He said the pain was not as bad as the first time he got hurt, but he must be considered iffy for Green Bay.
Inside linebacker Matt Wilhelm won't play because of a strained calf, the same injury that sidelined him for three of four exhibition games. Wilhelm was jogging on it Friday without a limp.
With Wilhelm out, second-year pro Tim Dobbins will make his first NFL start. Dobbins also played the majority of the game in New England but was often out of position and ineffective.
Injury updates
Linebacker Matt Wilhelm (calf) and receiver Eric Parker (toe) will likely be the only players unable to play Sunday. Wilhelm did run and do drills on the side and will likely return next week at Denver. Carlos Polk will start again this week.
