The treadmill ticked off kilometers, not miles. Sometimes the heaviest piece of equipment in a hotel gym was a 10-kilogram dumbbell.
But whatever he could find, Matt Wilhelm would sneak away from bed or the pool every day to get in a workout, even as he and his new bride toured France in early July.

Wilhelm knew what awaited him when he got back to the United States. It was going to be for real now. After four years of watching and waiting, he was taking over for an icon.

?I've thought about that just by myself,? Wilhelm said. ?I've never mentioned it to my wife, not to anyone. The guy was born and raised here, and us having the success over that five-year span, him having 150 tackles every year ... But I think it's going to take a short amount of time. Because I think the fans believe in this team, and I'm a big part of this team now.?

Wilhelm spoke, of course, about his succession of Donnie Edwards, the San Diego native who led the Chargers in tackles each of the past five seasons before leaving as a free agent for Kansas City.

Chargers feel the pain all over

Inside linebacker Matt Wilhelm also left the game in the first quarter. He played the first two series after aggravating in pregame warm-ups the calf strain that caused him to miss the first three preseason games. He said the pain was not as bad as the first time he got hurt, but he must be considered iffy for Green Bay.
