How Jonathon Cooper bet on himself, sent pro stock soaring
The decision was clearly a win-win in hindsight, and Jonathon Cooper suspected all along that would be the case.
That still didn’t make it easy to pull the plug on his first senior season, stay on the sidelines for a College Football Playoff game or watch his close friends head off to the NFL without him last year.
But Cooper needed a chance to prove what he could at defensive end when not bothered by a nagging high-ankle sprain. And he also always wanted to do what’s best for the Buckeyes, which in turn made a decision on their end to establish a tradition for the first selfless recipient of the Block O jersey a no-brainer with Cooper. Both sides wound up getting just about everything they could have possibly hoped for during Cooper’s bonus year at Ohio State, although obviously they would have preferred to get one more win before he finally took off the scarlet and gray for the final time.
“I would say in some way, yeah, [the decision was validated],” Cooper said after the Sugar Bowl. “You know, I honestly came back for my teammates and I wanted to show the world the type of football player that I am. I feel like I played pretty well against Clemson. I definitely went back and watched the film, there’s definitely some things I could get better at.
“But for the most part we got the job done and we won the game, and that’s the whole entire goal.”
Similar to Baron Browning, who was also picked by Denver, I like the fit as a 3-4 Rush LB. Unfortunately these guys will be competing for the same snaps, but I like the fit for both of them as stand-up, rush the edge type players. Cooper can hold the edge a bit better against run, while Browning is more explosive. Hopefully they both can make an impact.
It’s just kinda dawned on me, but I wonder if staff could have a re-do on defense last year, especially championship game, if instead of a 4-4 they transformed into, they woulda gone 3-4.
Baron Browning and Jonathan Cooper woulda been stud OLB’s in that system at college level where their athleticism would’ve been stout.
I know Tommy had Covid in Championship but a front of Togiai, Garrett, and Zach Harrison/Tyler Friday/Tyreke Smith woulda been interesting.
I think a better option than the 4-4 we got shredded on.
Former Ohio State linebacker Jonathon Cooper, a seventh-round selection of the Denver Broncos in this year’s NFL Draft, will reportedly miss Denver’s rookie minicamp next week. Mike Klis of KUSA reported that Cooper will undergo a minimally invasive heart procedure, which is expected to sideline him for a few weeks.
Cooper discovered an irregular heartbeat while in high school and dealt with a couple of ablations during his time at Ohio State. The former Buckeyes defender said he underwent an EKG examination during the offseason and sent the results to NFL teams in the days leading up to the draft.
The Broncos rookie believes the medical issue negatively impacted his draft stock.
“It was a difficult time my freshman year,” Cooper said. “Ever since I’ve been OK. This recent EKG, I have to figure things out but I feel fine. I should be ready to go very, very soon.”
