I've always been a fan of Lee from the perspective that even if he never plays a down on defense (which I am not saying he won't), he would be worth the 'ship alone as a special teams guy. He has the perfect mindset, body build, and skill set to be a terror on kick/punt coverage. We have seen ST deficiencies are very costly in the last few years and having a loyal Buckeye like Lee on coverage is huge. Look at how valuable Nate Ebner and Adam Griffin have been recently. All that being said, I think Lee grows into a LB with his frame ala Cie Grant and has a great chance to be a player for us at either LB or Star.

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Darron Lee talks like his mother.
Candice Lee is a reporter and weekend anchor at NBC4 in Columbus, a familiar face to central Ohio television viewers. Her son may be able to fill in if she needs a day off.
At the Buckeyes' spring football luncheon last week, new co-defensive coordinator Chris Ash was a little wired while introducing some defensive players to hundreds of fans, Urban Meyer having joked that the new OSU assistant would be evaluated on his luncheon performance.
Then Ash introduced the second-year Buckeyes linebacker with a joke about who would be more famous at the end of his OSU football career, Darron or his mother.
"Probably still my mom," Lee said, drawing laughs.

He may be our biggest factor against spread teams as well, he was great in space. Agreed, he was our best LB yesterday, flew to the ball. He and Perry's athleticism pushed Grant off the field.

If Perry and Lee were so good and the fault only Grant, how exactly did Navy rack up 370 yards rushing? Navy had 138 yards rushing in the first half but 196 yards in the third quarter.

I'm not putting all blame on Grant, but Perry and Lee played more and swarmed more to the ball. Navy racked up that many rushing yards, well because they're Navy. And Lee got us our first TD of the game, his athleticism made that play and return. Idk of many teams that shut down Navy last year, and they'll be even better this year. They very realistically could have yesterday as their only loss of the year.

Navy YPG average last year was 420. OSU just gave up 370.
Navy YPC last year was 5.46. OSU just gave up 5.9
Without a deep dive into the stats I'd say Navy did what Navy does and there isn't really much more we can take away from that game.

That's indicative of giving up some big runs, especially to that inside hand-off to the wing they kept having so much success with...

Actually, I am now remembering that Ash identified the problem as Navy having 4 plays tOSU never saw on film, for which tOSU could not adjust. See his interview on 11W (I think). Coaching problem.

I am currently watching the game again this morning (its my church) and I'm not seeing what everyone seems to have seen out of Lee. He was in on some plays for sure but it looks to me like the pitch was he and Whorleys responsibility most of the day with the QB on the DE and the dive and backside counter the MLB/S responsibilty.
Looks like we definitely should have walked the safeties up to at least the same depth as they were keeping the MLB in order to help out on the pitch. A lot of Lee's plays ended up 6-7 yards downfield due to indecision at the pitch point and trailing on a play. He was in that same position when Bosa collapsed the pitch and picked it up for the scoop and score - more of a lucky to be in the right place right time situation but I'll certainly take it.
Don't know if it was scheme or what but there was a lot of hesitation or cat and mouse play at the point of attack with the option. I've never been a fan of that unless you are the only defender on the short side of the field. Ends should have taken QB and OLB's should have been on pitch the whole way, imo. Having played DE through high school and college I'm only speaking from our best successes dealing with great option teams. More hits on QB = more success.
Overall the LB's were better than last year though for sure. They were typically making mistakes going downhill instead of in the wrong areas on the field. I can certainly live with that. Perry and Grant were pretty good in the middle though especially since they were tasked with being so deep. Grant in particular was very good when attacking or blitzing.
